Are there any resources that help people with learning and/or physical disabilities manage depression and suicidal thoughts? My brother is really struggling and I don't know how to support him.
Help with depression and suicidal thoughts - Mencap
I suffer with depression and suicidal thoughts to. I use the give us a shout charity, they are super supportive. And every time I get the suicidal thoughts, they keep texting me until I feel safe again. They are fantastic. Has your brother tried that charity? A free texting service for all ages, who live in the UK. I'm here if you need a listening ear,
Speak to Mencap helpline Mind or Rethink as these are all mental health services. Also all N.H.S. mental health services support those with a Learning Disability.
Thanks for posting about this. It is something a lot of people find hard to talk about.
Here are a few places that may be able to help:
> Mind (mind.org.uk/) They also have local services so see if there is one near you. Give them a call and ask if they can help.
> Give us a shout (giveusashout.org/) - Angelsoflove mentions this charity in their post
> Rethink (rethink.org/)
> You can find a local NHS urgent mental health helpline on here - (nhs.uk/service-search/menta...) - please note this is England only.
> Samaritans (samaritans.org/) - The Samaritans are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You (or your brother) can call 116 123 for free at any time.
Our helpline is also available if you want to talk to one of our advisors about your options. Find out more here - mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su... or call 0808 808 1111.
Finally, it would be worth getting your brother's GP involved. Talk to them and see what they suggest.
Hi Every area should have a mental health of learning disabilities team
Ask your brothers GP to refer him to them .
They have access to psychiatrist s and psychologists who are trained to work with people with learning disabilities .
