Hi people, I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. I would like to know, what agencies are needed to support an individual who has a learning disability to live in their own home?.
Help!!!: Hi people, I have a question that I hope... - Mencap
Help!!!
Here, in the UK Social Services normally helps you place individual in residential home for the disabled
Hello redtoe58
Hidden is right - usually it is social services provided by the local council, but there are lots of different ways of doing this. It really depends on the sort of support is needed.
It may also depend on the sort of benefits the person with LD gets, where you live, and what is available locally.
Housing wise, there are lots of different ways a person can live in their own home. Our housing section might be a good starting point so you know what is out there - mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su...
If you have any specific questions - then our helpline would be able to help. You can email them on helpline@mencap.org.uk. They have trained advisors who will be able to listen and help you find support near where you live.
Are you asking for a specific person? What would they like to do? Do they currently get any support from the local council?
I hope this helps.

Thank you so much Sarah. I am not asking for a person, I am working on my level 3 diploma in health and social care. I am struggling with the protocols of people who want to stay in their own homes. I really do appreciate your reply. Thank you.
Hi. Another thing to bear in mind is that parents are usually involved in these discussions. They very often need to talk to someone about their finances/will as this can really impact their children in the long term. For example, who will own the house? Will there be an inheritance that might impact benefits? We have a Wills and Trust service that helps people with that sort of thing - mencap.org.uk/advice-and-su....
It is a very complicate area and the support that people need varies so much.
Best of luck and thanks for posting.
cheers
Sarah
If anyone wants to live alone they must be able to be independent of all help etc but if they need support from other people a carer ,relative or social worker or nurse or Doctor can suggest and find ways to help.Ask the question do they need someone to help with meals. In Somerset meals can be delivered and just need heating through.A care can cook a meal from scratch(but might be limited by cooking skills themselves) or if independent they can go to a pub or cafe etc and have a meal or takeaway. If finance is not a problem a carer can live in and these can be supplied through agencies.Sometimes combinations of carers can work together to enable a person to live at home. Some LD adults can live in a community (block of flats with manager and carers on site.Social workers tend to have the answers because if a person has limited resources they will assess there "needs" not "wants" and they will know how to arrange a package of care economically and I use that term because after all it is the taxpayers money they need to use to pay for this support.A caring family can do this(find the agencies) but they can easily fall into traps of paying over the odds.SS do have packages which are negotiated but they will only help if the client has no resources. If you have money then they may give advice but might not help.
If a person lives alone but can go to day centers the carer only needs to visit at times when person is at home. I hope that helps your question a bit but carers and families need to be innovative and flexible. It is very hard for many and Social Workers are busy trying to spread the money fairly and not give it all to the very needy.Sorry last bit may not sound kind but they try hard to be fair.
hello, where are you based. how much support do they need ie hours per day or overnight.
