My dad has been treated with Opdivo for melanoma that has spread to lungs. He has had terrible side effects since starting treatment . Every muscle in his body attacked, blood clots in lung, double vision, can’t swallow. . Been in hospital over a week Just awful. Anyone else have any info on opdivo and if side effects will reverse??

My son couldn't tolerate the stomach side effects from opdivo and yervoy. You have to let the doctor know about the side effects.

My sister did the ipi/nivo combo she had tolerable side effects but you might want to ask your doctor about blood clots. Our doctor told us that melanoma has vascular issues which cause the blood clots. She wasn’t on any medication at the time blood clots started appearing. Not sure this is helpful but something to confirm with doctor. Hindsight being what it is - I wish I would have asked about the “side effects” of the melanoma. For my sister it caused blood clots and brain lesion bleeds which we found out later are part of the effects of the melanoma which I didn’t read in the websites I was reviewing. I wish I would have known this information sooner than after it happened.

Good luck with your dad my thoughts are with you and your family.

I’m sorry to hear your dad is having a rough time. Learning about the course of the illness and side effects from reliable cancer sites may help inform your questions and support as a caregiver. Do you know why this particular course of treatment was chosen vs other immunotherapy options? Sometimes side effects are unavoidable but need aggressive management. Are you working with a melanoma experienced oncologist? With stage 4 melanoma, which is my assumption since you said he had melanoma that had spread, treatment may need to be aggressive.

I’m sorry you all are facing down a raging dragon right now. Different doctors have experience with various treatment protocols. Sometimes a second opinion can help family feel more comfortable with a treatment direction.

This community can help support you in this frightening time. What do you need from us right now?

Melanoma he had on his arm showed up in his lung 2 1/2 years after intitial surgery Opdivo is supposed to be good treatment for melanoma and lung cancer. I don’t know. But it has attacked his entire system. He was healthy playing golf each week before he started treatment. He is now in ICU. Just awful.
