Sorry this is a bit late but I’ve been super duper busy recently and just a little distracted by the impending British Masters Indoor Championships this Sunday.

I was asked to represent my Area Club in the 60m which is quite an honour as I’ve not been fast enough in previous years to warrant selection and have been nudged out, quite rightly, by other faster athletes. But I seem to be having a bit of a purple patch with my indoor sprinting this year and currently I’m lying in third place in the UK rankings having been recently usurped from number 1 spot by two young whippersnappers who just turned 60!

Each of the 9 masters areas enter their best athletes for the events and it is a points based event. Despite the title of England Area Challenge, there are teams from the whole UK represented. Never quite understood that. 🤔

There were two men’s M60 60m races seeded by fastest athletes first. I was with three others in my race and the remaining 5 in the second race. Overall Positions were awarded based on times.

I didn’t have a good race technically, and false started which is something I haven’t done for a very long time. Then another athlete false started and after that we had to stand up because of a technical fault. On the fourth time the starter held us for a very long time in the set position and I twitched just before the gun went off and I lost the spring, which is basically holding all the leg and glute muscles tight ready to explode out of the blocks.

Technically this is a disaster as it’s almost impossible to get a decent drive once that happens and you end upright before the drive phase is complete. If you look closely at the video you’ll see the twitch. It’s almost imperceptible but it’s enough to ruin the race.

I therefore got away badly and had to dig really deep to finally win the race. It was a relief for sure but, being my harshest critic, I simply cannot let that happen this Sunday as it will spell disaster.

All of the above seems like I had a really bad day, but I didn’t, honestly. 😂 I’m the inter area M60 60m champion after all.

Sunday is the culmination of the indoor session with the British Masters Indoor Championships. It’s going to be such a close call for any of top 3 positions as there at least 6 of us capable of it. There are 3 heats at 10:00 and then the final at 14:35. Most of my family will be in attendance which will be lovely but will also add a touch of extra pressure. It’ll be fun for sure! 👍

Thank you for reading and all your support.

Yes it’s great when you first enter an age group and everything goes in your favour - and then you get older and younger ones come through! Sounds like you are holding your own though Brian. I can imagine every second counts in such a short race so I wish you a twitch less competition at the weekend. I bet your family are so proud of your achievements.
