As you may know, today’s Great South Run didn’t go ahead due to the poor weather.
However, I was lucky enough to have a friend from running club who was willing to run 10 miles with me, at my pace. Given the poor weather conditions I decided to ‘Jeff’ the whole thing, based on my heart rate. My idea was to slow to a walk every time my heart rate reached ‘anaerobic’ level, then restart running when it got back down to a more normal level. This strategy worked very well and I completed the run without any problems, even when the rain was lashing down and the wind got stronger.
I’m very pleased to have completed a virtual GSR, even if the real thing didn’t go ahead!

Thanks cheekychipmunks I’ll definitely keep a record of it, just in case they accept it as evidence of my virtual effort. As you say, the medal’s far too good to go to landfill 😢
I’m also going to repay the friend who ran with me today by doing similar runs with her when she’s training for her marathon next year! 🏃♂️➡️🏃♀️➡️ I found it quite comfortable, even in rotten weather, so I’m sure I could extend it to HM distance and beyond. It might even encourage me to register for a full marathon in due course! 😉
I have been reading reactions from other runners wanting a virtual version of the Great South Run to save all the medals and T Shirts going to be binned or going to landfill, I wonder if they could do that perhaps as soon as possible.
Congratulations David! It sounds like you absolutely made the best of a tough situation. What a super run! You deserve some bling - have a virtual 🏅 from me…,I hope the GSR will send you a proper one!
Loads of positives in that confidence boosting run. Good luck for the HM you’ve definitely got in you and the future marathon!!! ❤️
Thanks MissUnderstanding I’m feeling much more confident now, and my friends and colleagues at Cardiac Rehab ❤️🩹 will be very pleased with my result too!
Great work David! I gave myself the day off; time for my bottom lip to heal ☹️! I plan to get out tomorrow, although the trails will be claggy. Not a pb day, more a get it done and grab a coffee effort! Still, it will be good to be running rather than sitting on trains.
