Trip to the Physio; the verdict!!

First, thanks for all of the helpful responses this week. It’s funny how we can go for weeks without any running issues and then, out of the blue, chaos descends ( there may be a tiny measure of literary overstatement there, but hey, it’s Friday!)

As expected, my physio found tight hamstrings, quads and a couple of knots in my calves too. As she was boring her way into my legs, we had a chat about age, exercises, distances and weights.

She said that I needed to extend my massage ball work, which I always do for my calves, to include hamstrings and quads too. No problem. She dismissed any notion of 3 runs per week and doing regular long distance runs as being “too much” for the 71 year old me. She said that my long runs have built up the necessary leg strength for regular distance running and there were no concerns. Happy days!

My tight muscles, particularly the hamstrings and quads are down to my starting intervals again, and she has given me exercises/stretches, complete with videos, to do between now and next week’s second appointment, and, I think, on a continuing basis.

We didn’t discuss weight training in any detail; I will pick that up next week. I am doing some daily dumb bell stuff now, but that is for upper body. I can run a few 5ks this week just to keep me ticking over.

All in all, not a bad outcome. The revolution (aka exercise programme) starts tomorrow 🙂

Result BC! Your physio is worth her wait in gold and most likely knows the workings of your body as well as you do! Keep her, do not let her go. ✋

It seems like you have a great regime to follow. I hope you enjoy your massage ball because it sounds like you’ll be getting even better acquainted 😅 You’ll be a well oiled machine gliding along your trails and sliding into the cafe with ease.

I’m happy things are going well. 😀

Thanks CC. Maybe I will switch to “in ear” headphones so that I can’t hear the off stage noises. 🙂

There is a team of 3; all really good. The boss is the one with magical diagnostic skills. 🙂

Great news Beachcomber66 ! Nothing like a good physio is there? Sounds like you’ve got everything covered and under control! 🙂

Back on the rails Sandra thanks. Unusual for me to have a wobble, but nobody is exempt.🙂

I was blown off course a bit too easily Linda. Yet another lesson learned…I will never be too old for that anyway 🙂

That all sounds very positive BC. I love physios who are positive about our running.

I had a new one recently who went on and on about getting older and that maybe I needed to cut back….. I didn’t go back to see her and won’t. On the other hand, there is another physio at the same practice who is so positive about running and her mantra is use it or lose it. Such a different approach.

Enjoy your massage ball!

I’ve seen two physios at the same hospital and both said to keep running. Music to my ears for sure 😀. Don’t know about anyone else but I feel this instinctively. To NOT do it would be counter intuitive, so I’m glad I got the green light from them. It reinforces my belief 🙂. Yer know what I mean 😁

I do! I only go to upbeat positive professionals when I can.

They don’t have to be runners; just empathetic and supportive….and have a sense of humour so that they can put up with me for 45 minutes!🙄

The first physio I was assigned to when I got the shin stress fracture was a female. When I got there though I’d been re-assigned to a chap because he was a runner! 😀. He was great. I was lucky and grateful to him 🙏

Back on the road again 🎶🎵🏃‍♀️

It is easier to start with if they are runners, but it’s ok if they are trainable!

You’re so right. A sense of humour is vital.

😂 I can’t say that I enjoy the massage ball; that would be a bit weird. But, I can easily tolerate it because I know it means steps on the road to recovery. The head physio at my practice knows that she needs to get me back out there as soon as possible, and that culture flows through the team. The worry about getting older etc is there in my head, she knows it, but doesn’t mention it. She helps me to push back. That’s what we need 👍

All around we see “old” folks much younger than us, on sticks and mobility scooters, etc. My home town is nicknamed “stick city” for gawd’s sake! 🙄

I don’t want any of that thank you very much 😁. I was watching videos the other day about 92 year old marathoners and 65 year old skateboarding ladies. They’re having FUN out there. So am I! Well, maybe not yesterday cos I was struggling on my 32k. I did the beggar though 😤 💪🏃‍♀️

My young great nephew inspires me. He was here the other day with an old electric guitar he’d been given. He’s crazy about Zep and Motörhead so we were rockin out to various ear-splitting stuff. Beats reorganising a pill mill 😁

Listen to Dylan’s “Forever Young” on your runs. I sing it loud 😁😊 💪🏃‍♀️

It sure does so I’m not going there - in my mind at least 😁

The kids call me AntiSonic so I can’t let em down 😀

Sounds very helpful BC. I've recently signed up to Zoe and last week they had this podcast '💪🏼 Resistance training: How to stay strong as you age' which to my shame I haven't watched yet, but it sounds interesting

Excellent Beachcomber66 , what a great physio you have. I have 4 rotating spiked balls on a stick which I use on my calves, and I call it the torture stick!

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply to Dexy5

My massage ball is full of spikes, and just sits in the palm of my hand. Molly can just about grip it in her jaws when she steals it! It is very effective…when I use it!!

I completely agree, Ive just done a post about how suddenly my running form changed from issues that I just didnt ever foresee and it completely threw me off course, but now Im hopefully on the right pathway again. Hope you heal soon.🙏

And you Hedgehogs. I sipped in a 31 minute NRC recovery run this morning and my legs felt much better for the massage. Have done my exercises for the day, so here’s hoping that I can close the book on the last week. 👍
