running after an operation

Hi all

Hope you are all doing ok.

it's been a while since I posted. My running dropped off a bit back just before the pandemic with a meniscus tear and a tibia fracture. Got back up to 5k, got back up to 10k, very slowly, my knee still gave me gip. I missed my half-marathon.

Sport started making me feel a bit down and a bit sick, so it tapered off yet again.

Turns out, after some blood tests, an ultrasound and an MRI, that I have an 11+cm ovarian cyst, which is pushing on stuff, taking up lots of room and generally making me feel uncomfortable without being able to put a finger on exactly what felt wrong.

I have my operation next week, should be keyhole surgery (so three 1.5 cm cuts) and my doctor said things should get back to normal.

So my question is, how should I go about starting over again. What are the best strengthening exercises after an abdominal type op? I will obviously ask my doctor but advice from those that have been there and done that would be gratefully appreciated. I'm not sure what, if any, re-education will be involved from the health services.

Thanks

BIT

So sorry to hear about all these issues. Really hope the operation goes well and that you can recover swiftly. Take care.

Thank you Stephen. I will get the pleasure of starting C25K all over again, but I will get my HM somehow, it's just further down the road than I thought it was

Sorry to read you’ve had such a rubbish time ☹️

As you say, you’ll need to take advice from your consultant. Just tell her/him that you're a passionate runner and want to get back as soon as safely possible and hopefully they’ll give you a good recovery programme.

I’m sure you will understand the reasons why people here can’t give any advice on such a matter. We’re not medically trained and it could be totally the wrong advice for you as every case is different. Your consultant really is the best person to advise you.

But, I’m sure that your running fitness will get you on the road to recovery quicker than if you were a non-exerciser.

Take care and keep us updated on your recovery. You’ll be back running in no time 🙂

All the best for the operation 💐

Again I agree that your doctor is best placed to help you. But we can definitely applaud your determination and we can be here to celebrate every step back to that half marathon. Sending very best wishes for a speedy post op recovery 😊

Good luck with your op. My kidney donation op was key hole, I asked everyone who was involved in my surgery when I could return to running and got some guidelines. The most important thing in my opinion is to wait until you have your check up appointment and ask again as that will be the most up to date information as you are recovering, also if you feel you are not where you want to be it is an ideal time to ask for a physio referral to get you back on your feet, which is what I did and they were brilliant.

I can’t offer any advice and, as others have said, your doctor will be able to offer a better assessment. However, it is nice to see you back after what has clearly been a pretty rubbish time and we will be waiting to encourage and cheer you on when you get back to running. Good luck with the operation!
