And He Goes Again!

Apparently, he wasn't even trying to break the record, he just aimed to win. And he won alright. In a record 2.01.09, beating his own record by 30 seconds. Dunno what else to say. Is 'magnificent' the most fitting word to describe the great man?

I like how he goes into the race, not thinking about setting any record, simply focusing on winning. 😎😉

Just unbelievable!

The man trains by running pre dawn marathons on an empty stomach. That's pretty good going, eh?

Absolutely stunning. You can’t help but marvel at that sort of achievement. He was twenty minutes faster than I ran a half marathon distance the other day!

As a very young musician I learned that at least one guy simply had that special talent, a unique ability, completely his own, his chops way more advanced than my skill set. It's the same with everything else. I read that some of the runners who train with Eliud (you can, if you wish, run an early morning marathon with him, but at his own tempo) simply drop out at some stage, unable to keep up. Only a few finish, but finish a way behind. And those guys are athletes, not part timers, unique and skilled in their own right. Except, he is a little bit more unique and skilled. Sometimes it's best to simply sit back and marvel at such achievements.

Absolutely. There’s the gain can make through training and the gift you’re just born with. I would love to see him run. The speed is incomprehensible to me!

….and the fine detail - him being relaxed during such race as well as looking as if not much has happened right after the finish 😉..

An absolute legend. He ran a whole marathon 30 minutes faster than my half this morning 😳

It’s even more fun when it sinks in that he runs approximately 2.50 min per kilometre (or 4.30 per mile) at a constant interval speed for the entire duration. No stopping, no drinking, just powering through. 😀 If you threw me off the cliff I’d struggle to reach that speed. 😅

2.5 min/km = 6.6667 m/s

Assuming no air resistance, and g at 9.8 m/s².

v = u + gt

u = 0. Solve for t where v = 6.6667 = (20/3) m/s

t = v/g = (20/3)/9.8 = 0.6803 s

Now the distance is given by s = ut + ½gt², where u=0.

Therefore the minimum cliff height to reach Kipchoge's velocity is

9.8 (0.6803)² / 2 = 2.268 m

Or just under 7½ feet.

This is actually quite impressing! 😉 But l can see his team reading similar stuff to him and Eliud going, ‘nah mate, I’ll just run my own thing’. 😀

Yep. And the entire small elite circle. But one has to win and he's certainly doing it in style. Absolutely remarkable.

He is not one of us 😂 An alien being I reckon. 😂

I beg to disagree, good sir. We are all in this together, doing the same thing but with varied results. Admittedly, his current achievement is somewhat better than mine (by several hours) but I still feel as being a part of the gang. And you are also one of us! 😉👍😎

it’s in the genes maybe 🙂. Whatever it is it’s an amazing feat Testament to his hard work and dedication to the sport. He’s such a softly-spoken, gentle man 😍

Genes definitely, the rest is hard work, commitment, determination. And yes, he looks in the zone at all times, and no ego.

I listen to the Nike guided runs and Eliud, along with Paula and Shalane Flanagan etc etc, and their work ethic comes through strongly. Steely determination and guts also It’s no cakewalk even for them 😀.

He talks of the physical pain once past 30-32km. Mind, they don’t jog, they go full tilt so even when you are as great as those guys, you still get hit. I’m fascinated by all that stuff.

me too! I once read somewhere about the Nike training camp in kenya and what they ate etc. Not much! 😁. Apparently they run at two speeds - very slow and very fast 😀.

mrrun profile image
mrrunUltramarathon in reply to misswobble

Yeah, they tend not to eat burgers or fry ups. Or drink packs of lager. And their ‘very slow running’ tends to be ‘marginally’ faster than, say, mine. 😅

No junk food! As I recall, small amounts of beef, a carb meal made from a local tuberous veg and lashings of sweet tea They all seem underweight to me 🙂

Perfect weight and build for what they do. Enough muscle power to see you through 42km in around 2 hours. 😉

😁. The time I take to run a marathon does frustrate me but I console myself with thoughts of what else I’d be doing on a freezing cold November day 🥶 Dusting me knick-knacks or stirring the plum duff 🤷‍♀️.

I know many who would find dozens of things to do on a freezing November day, and marathon not being even on their subconscious list. 🤣🤣

Watched a big chunk of it live on YouTube. Just astounding to see all those km splits under 3 minutes.😯

Imagine guys on that level looking at us on YouTube thinking, ‘why on earth does it take them that long to cover that distance!’ 😉😅
