Wow, it's the last day of January, how did that happen? (don't answer that) How's your training going? (answer that) π
I've not been doing a lot of running over the past couple of weeks because my left Achilles has been playing up again - shout out to my pals on the Injury Couch! π
Actually, I have not been staying on the sofa, since everyone knows one doesn't rest a tendon! Lots of strength work, crosstraining, and a dab of running have been keeping me more or less fit, and the Achilles is already a lot better hooray!!! Hoping to get (cautiously) started again with the marathon plan soon...
Speaking of marathons, the other day my brother linked me to the December Rock 'n' Roll Fiesta in his home town of San Antonio, Texas. This is a terrible idea for many reasons, not least the fact that I'm already doing two marathons and an ultramarathon this year! And some other stuff π But still, San Antonio's lovely, and a rock 'n' roll marathon is very tempting!
I had an ankle tendon issue a couple of years ago (not achilles fortunately) and was pleased to hear rest was not the solution. I did my exercises diligently and it resolved over a few months. Hope you get your achieves to behave!!I have had 2 weeks+ of loomergencies on every run except, thank God, parkrun. This is really getting me down. Bizarrely I pulled a parkrun PB out of the bag on Saturday, shaving off over 30 seconds. Maybe some sort of mental urgency spurred me on.
New week, new start. Short sprint ntervals at lunchtime today, with tissues just in case...
Hey! Good to see you!!! I'm glad you sorted out your terrible tendon πππ
My Achilleses are a regular source of annoyance! I'm thinking about getting a physio to have a look at my running form to see if there are any clues there - will wait until it's more healed first though!
Sorry to hear about the loomergencies, I really do feel for you and hope it settles asap! Good on you for the PB though, that's fabulous π
Sorry about your Achilles. Well done on the strengthening and the cross training. Iβm rubbish at that which is not good if youβre a wannabe long distance runner!
Running has gone well this month. I finished at 170km so happy with that especially as Iβve only managed a couple of 8 milers due to the heat.
Iβve started my marathon plan today although wonβt run an actual marathon this year. The first few weeks are less mileage than Iβm used to running but Iβm going to go with the plan as is so I can test for using for an actual race.
The longest runβs are 16miles so hopefully if I remember to run a little extraβ¦..I can get that metric badge.
Happy running, cross training, strengthening or resting folks β€οΈπββοΈππ»ββοΈ
If it also means seeing your brother again youβve got to do San Antonio roseabi. That looks such fun.
No marathon planned for me - ever π, but I have the vitality 10k in London in May which was deferred from 2020 and the New Forest 10k in September. They have weekend camping and concerts so lots of fun to be had there and distances go from family dog walk to marathon. Iβm sure Iβll be entering a few more along the way.
Awesome, I love a 10K and both of those sound lovely, esp the New Forest one, wow!!!! Looking forward to seeing what else you do and how you get on π
Glad to hear your Achilles is on the mend roseabi. They are a pain arenβt they? Mine is still very annoying too. Last week I invested in a Theragun and I am hoping that it will make a difference. Iβve been buzzing my quads, calves and feet since Friday and I think Iβm starting to feel a difference in my feet π€Meanwhile, Iβve signed up for my local 10k in September and the Compton Verney half marathon I did last year in July in 30c. So thatβs 4 HMs now, I think that will do. Not tempted by anything elseβ¦yetβ¦
Currently training for the first HM, which should have been the Bath Half but is now just to help Katnap with his Manchester Marathon training. Hard long run yesterday which I did not enjoy but I did choose a horrible route!
Thanks roseabi, itβs getting there very slowly. Doesnβt help Iβm upping my mileage but hey hoβ¦
The route is 4.5 miles that go to my friends house. Itβs down one long main A road with narrow, generally badly maintained tarmac paths, lots of litter chucked from cars π’. Lots of fast traffic too. Itβs redeeming features are that itβs through the countryside so I can bird and wildlife spot, and, of course, goes to my friendβs house! But she wasnβt inβ¦ π€ͺ
I only did it because there was a race going on at the same time on my usual routes and I needed a 9 miler. I would have done the race but it wasnβt far enough (it should have been as itβs called βNot the Roman IXβ, but thereβs no Roman roads and itβs neither 9k or 9 miles! Itβs 12k. Confused?! Yes, me too! π) Still, itβs done and it helps makes my other runs seem more pleasant.
Hey everyone. Glad your Achilles is on the mend Roseabi. A rock and roll marathon in Texas sounds amazing, not sure I could justify the flights though!
My running is going quite well at the minute, managed my highest monthly mileage in January (106 miles) and I'm about to embark on a mileage challenge to support the Midlands Air Ambulance in February - 121 miles. I'm still eternally grateful for them coming to pick me up many years ago, so that should be good motivation to get me through the upcoming long runs. Hopefully (if I get the maths right) finishing with a half marathon on 27th Feb.
Ooh. Achilles. A massively frustrating injury. I had a similar issue a few months back. Lots of stretching/massaging/strengthening and some gentle, but initially uncomfortable, movement sorted it out. Hope you are in the mend soon @roseabi!
Iβve now completed week 1 of my 18 week marathon training plan. It felt good to get started, though I learned very quickly that tempo runs and hills do not mix. Lesson learned for next time π Though with a stunning view any disappointment at performance quickly subsided.
Iβm also getting used to some new running shoes. I miss my old ASICS so much, but my gait has changed, so here I am questioning every step I take. Iβve found my socks might be a tad too thick, so Iβll be ordering some new ones. Who ever said running was a cheap activity was not entirely truthful.
Enjoy another week of running everyone!
Country lane with the sun rising over hills with blue sky and dabbled clouds
Iβm on the injury couch too π. I sort of pulled up during intervals on Saturday but managed to finish. Limped home. I walked Ok yesterday but breaking into a trot was no go π¬
I did some calf raises and heel lifts this morning. My left knee has been stiff for a week or so, and the pain seems to radiating from there. So, taking some down time π
I hope youβll soon be right Roseabi, and anyone else sitting it out ππͺπ
An iffy achilles isnβt going to stop you! And it clearly didnβt given everything else youβve been doing πͺ I hope it disappears completely soon.
That Marathon sounds like a lot of fun. I wonder if thereβs music the whole way around? Surely not. Dublin have a Rock βn Roll HMβ¦..
Talking about HMs and FMs, Iβm currently being a bit tempted to start marathon trainingβ¦. just βa bit temptedβ mind π€ Given the Bath postponement I now have more time to play around with and I was thinking of increasing distance anyway after my race in two weeks.
Lots of things for me to consider so Iβm still pondering but thereβs a nag that is getting a bit louder these days π I mean, whatβs the worst that can happen?
Have a good everyone and happy tempting to all πx
Iβm floundering around at the moment, being another casualty of the postponed Bath Half. Iβm continuing my HM plan regardless, but capping the long run at 10k until itβs time to reset the plan for the new date of 29th May. I have entered a race with Sandie1961 and Shake-and-run in its place in March though - the Burghley 7! Itβs a 7 mile race which I couldnβt resist, plus I get my VRB fix! π₯°
Happy to see the weather being slightly more springlike too! Skylarks back on the common yesterday. β€οΈ
Hi roseabi and running friends! I've also got a bit of a niggle, this time in my right leg. I'm not sure whether it's the Achilles as it seems to move around!π I'm doing plenty of strength exercises and I'll do a few short/slow runs this week. I'm up to week 6 of the HM Training Plan on the NRC app, which I'm finding very useful, although I'm going to put my HM training on hold for a couple of weeks and concentrate on the London Winter Run which is on Sunday 13 February. I'm sure it'll be fine to pick up the HM training afterwards.
Have fun everyone, enjoy your running - it won't be long until spring and we get longer days!
Achilles tendons can be a major faff. A newish pair of shoes rubbed the area behind my right ankle back in November, and I had a rubbing feeling in the area for weeks afterwards.
I've had to be careful when kitting up so that I don't have things rubbing that area, otherwise I feel the sensation coming back.
In other news, RED January is now complete and I'm going to ease off a little. No races planned, but my work colleagues keep hinting at entering for something.
I'm going to wait for spring before trying to extend my long run distance. The plan is to keep things ticking over at about the current level until then.
Me too! I like a shallower shoe with a soft heel counter. I donβt use the top most lace holes either. I cut my Brooks glycerines down the back of the heel to stop the rub
Good luck getting that achilles back to work! What's tempting me right now is Penticton parkrun! Covid willing I'm off back to Canada tomorrow, and Penticton Parkrun have just announced they can restart this Saturday!!! My needs are simple π₯° speedy healing and much patience to anyone on the IC xxx
Hi @roseabi definitely go for it! I did the Liverpool Rock 'n' Roll HM last year and the atmosphere was awesome. Just wish they were doing another UK/Europe one!
Iβd love a rock n roll race - being an old rocker an all βΊοΈ πΈ Iβll have to make do with my tunes though πΆπ΅ I have run in America though! I just remembered βΊοΈ Riverfront Cincinatti πββοΈ
That sounds lovely! I ran once in San Antonio, also along the river, and it was great until I fell over and had to get my head glued by a doctor ππ Texas is very warm and humid, but I don't mind that - actually quite like it!
I've already whined on quite enough elsewhere about my unfun January, so let's skim over that. Hopefully February will be better - I managed to run 6k yesterday without my hip or leg complaining unduly, so that's a start.
As for temptation: I've been nobly resisting the sales. Until today, that is, when I went into one of the local chains and found that they were doing "Buy two sale items, get a third free." Result: one pair of Brooks Ghost 14s at 40% off, and two identical trail shirts marked down by 50%. I'll take and add photos later. Total cost: β¬107 rather than β¬230. That should be me set up for spring and summer running, at least on roads!
Happy running (and resting and recovery, to everyone in need of those) to all!
Iβm late as usual! Oh that achilles has been an issue for so long now. I really hope you are back to full strength very soon Roseabi!
My new Speedgoats have been bothering not the achilles tendon, but the opposite tendon on the front of the ankle. Its the shoe tongue rubbing against it, the tongue being made of some stiff waterproof rubberized stuff. Re-lacing the shoes helped, as did switching out to an older pair or my road pair for occasional treadmill runs.
No temptation needed for me as weβve just booked our hotel in Berlin for September, and now my training and focus for this year will be shifting from trail to more road. Itβs exciting and a little daunting! I will still get the trail runs in but also more speed work and less hill work as the weather warms up. Still minus 20s out there now. I also will likely be shifting my 50k race to a lower distance because it hits two weeks before Berlin. And the race after Berlin will just be a fun one with no goals. Happy running everyone!
