Weekly Chat 15th Nov to 21st: what's your idea of a treat? πŸ°β˜•πŸ₯‚

Hellooooo Monday!

My, I've had a busy few weeks! And I've not been able to run either because of injury😒 But I feel a corner may be being turned on both counts, so fingers crossed!

Thanks to everyone who joined in the HU HM & 10k so enthusiastically this weekend, and to those who plan to run yours this coming week. Anyone can join in and submit your times, right up til this coming Sunday (see link below).

Reading all the race reports yesterday reminded me of lazy weekend days after long runs or events. Sometimes I'll do next to nothing all day after a big effort - other than treat myself of course! So what's your 'go to' after a long run (and mandatory stretchesπŸ‘)? When you have the time, what do you do to treat yourself? Or is it more a case of, having used up all your allotted 'me' time for the day, you then have to work especially hard for the rest of the day to make up for it?

How's your running going, or are you too trying to find patience on the IC? Do let us know in the comments. If you're new here, jump in and say Hello! 😁

Have a great week everyone, whatever you're up to!

The Marathon Team xxx

Hi linda9389 & other running superhero’s,

I’m so sorry you’ve been injured. Hope you’re back out there very soon!

I’ve been loving reading everyone’s HU HM and 10k reports. Thank you again to you and the team for all your hard work 😍

I’m still on for the 10k but will run it later in the week. It was hot this morning and I only had an hour including warm up and cool down. I was tempted to try for a sub 60 but I’ve just moved to a 6 day a week HM plan so the sensible thing is to run easy.

I hit 1000 miles for the year last week which at the start of 2021 was not expected or planned for.

Running is my only β€˜me’ time which is why it’s so precious. I’ve just ordered some organic pea protein chocolate powder and some super greens with a protein shaker for recovery treats!

Happy running or recovering β€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Ooh. congratulations on your 1000 miles - that's awesome! Running with your views must be a treat in itself, but 'Me' time is probably the best treat anyway! Good luck with your 10k - you're absolutely right, you definitely don't want to push it at the start of a new plan!

Hi! My 10k time was 1:08:36... Not sure where to submit it! Thank you very much for organising it... And I hope next time I'll be able for the half marathon!

Excellent! Here is just fine thank you, but I'll put up a results post this afternoon and include the times I already have. Here's to that future half 😊

Hello Monday! πŸ€ͺ

I'm feeling really pleased with myself; 7 days, 7 workouts, 8 runs totalling 44 miles, 4 sea swims, all my domestic and work obligations met and took my elderly neighbour to Tesco and the health shop πŸ˜‡

Do you know, my treat requirements have dramatically reduced. I used to want extra me time or meals but I'm very happy with a cup of tea and a tasty snack bar now 🀣 (eat natural ginger, chocolate and apple are lush!)

Incredibly I've reduced my bath times, that was always my luxury, lazing in a hot bath but now it's pretty quick in and out.

I have been using a character meditation to go to sleep and spending more time in quietude, less background noise πŸ€”

Thank you Linda and roseabi for the fabulous RunGo programme. I forgot my headphones for my actual run but listened to it on my drive to work today (which was really hilarious with my 2 min miles 🀣) you did a fantastic job once again!! 🀩

Fingers and toes all crossed for your injury πŸ₯°πŸ€žπŸ»πŸ€žπŸ»πŸ€žπŸ»

Wow JoJo - you are a machine, a very happy and well oiled machine at that! I'm a big fan of the Eat Natural bars too πŸ‘ I did wonder if Rungo would work in the car, but at least it got me out on my bike 😍

I’m a fan of those too if I’ve run out if my home baked ones. I had to hide them as OH was eating them at an alarming rate. He’s making inroads into my fresh bag of Haribo’s too 😀. I’ve taped up my box of tailwind and written β€œDO NOT NICK!” on the box 😁

Hi Linda 😊Hope to hear soon that you manage off the IC πŸ™

Loving the healthy replies to this so far πŸ˜ƒ

I must admit to a very indulgent day yesterday after the HU HM, luckily it was a Sunday 🀩

I lazed on the sofa far too long reading others race reports..πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒπŸ…

Then had breakfast .. tofu scramble, onions, garlic, tomato, peppers, mushroom, beans.. and as a treat added two hash browns πŸ˜‹

Then a long bath with the radio playing.. reflecting on my run..and my health goals for the next few months πŸ™

I want/ need to cut my sugar intake it's a real nemesis for me... I'm vegan and otherwise eat really healthily.. but far too many cakes are creeping into my diet🍰🍰🍰

I started sprouting again recently and adding ashwaganda, and pomegranate (good for the gut) ...

My running goal is to keep up as much as the winter weather allows my monthly milage with the aim of entering the great Scottish Run HM next year.. would be my first HM event well second as I consider yesterday as an event πŸƒπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ…πŸ‘

Happy Running everyone.. πŸ’₯

Days treats and achievement

I'd _sort_ of like to reduce my sugar too, I still take it in my tea. I've moved to Half Spoon but haven't moved any closer to cutting it out 🀣

We don't indulge in many vegan sweet things apart from the odd birthday cake, we're not really dessert people any more.

I make sauerkraut at home to help gut health πŸ‘πŸ»

Sounds lovely meal that does. I’ve been trying to get me tofoo to be crispy on the outside but puffy on the inside 😁

I’ve got two bottles of different brand pomegranate molasses which were gifted to me which are versatile. It makes a sticky coating for all sorts πŸ˜‹. It’s not particularly sweet either

Our running fuel is really important. On the run I think about the food waiting for me Keeps me going 😜

Ooh that sounds like my kind of rest and recovery day! Yours sounds very healthy too. I'd say cake is essential after a long run if that's what you fancy!!!

cheekychipmunks profile image

Oh you healthy souls!

We eat very healthily as a family, and I love to cook from scratch (most of the time), but after a long run I will chow down almost anything and consider that I’ve earned it. Yesterday I cooked a roast for the whole family plus a visiting friend. That’s my kind of treat, and the more I can pile on my plate the better.

If it’s a race day and I’m driving home, I treat myself to large fries from a well known fast food chain - those salty delectable crunchy delights that I honestly could devour at any time, but don’t. Oh I want some now …… 🍟

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to cheekychipmunks

A roast dinner does taste good post-race, I have to agree there! I know I'm a bit odd, but I can't bear fries normally, however I can see that might just be a niche time to enjoy them!!! I like a bag of mini cheddars for that same savoury kick - in fact I quite like them towards the end of a really long run when my stomach is getting sick of sweet energy hits 😊

Nope! I look at them, smell them and think yum ... but can never eat more than two! Sweet potato fries and almost any other version of potato ... I love! Just not chips!!! Good old mash being my fave 😍😍😍

I’ve bought my marathon Hula Hoops πŸ€—

Fingers crossed that you're off the IC soon!

As for me, I treat myself to a cup of (cold) chocolate milk after every run. I once read this is good for runners but I can't remember why anymore, my mind stayed stuck with 'good for runners + chocolate'. So like a good little student, I take my glass of chocolate milk after every run, whether it be 5K or 10K.

As to the HU 10K, where exactly do you go to fill in your time?

sparky66 profile image

πŸ˜‚ I like your logic πŸ€ͺ

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to

Love that description!!! I used to always have cold chocolate milk straight after a long hard run. But in the end I stopped and now drink peppermint tea then eat something lighter. I was ending up feeling nauseous after long runs and I think it was a struggle to digest the chocolate milk that I'd thrown down at breakneck speed because it tasted so good 😍You can add your time here, or in a results post that I will set up later today, your choice 😊

Hi Linda! Wishing you all the best with your corner-turning πŸ₯°

Great to see all those race reports yesterday! I am not feeling well today so I'm not sure about doing the 10K tomorrow - maybe it'll have to be later in the week πŸ˜†

My latest treat fad is those sweet cold coffees (frappuchino or that), I am mildly addicted! Mostly I just like the buzz after a workout though ⚑

I've been enjoying my triathlon training plan, the workouts are hard but doable, and mostly less than an hour long too. And I've been getting some strength work done. Hope I perk up soon so I can get everything ticked off this week! I'm just taking a rest day on the sofa today, or well, mostly πŸ˜‚

Happy running and resting everyone xxx

Hi Linda;🀞🀞🀞🀞🀞that your ic period is over. You have had more than your share.

My post run treat is of course a flat white at our walkway cafe. It used to be accompanied by a triple chocolate brownie, but I have flirted with lotus biscoff flapjack and other delights recently. A bacon sandwich after a long run (10k+) goes down well too.

This morning, I went for an 8k trail run over a new route as part of my attempts to build up distance again. I ended up with two sore ankles/achilles, but I managed the distance. Back to the physio for me ☹️!

The new route didn’t pass the cafe, so Molly and I had a walk out there this afternoon. Molly got lots of fuss(and treats from the cafe owner) and I got my flat white(s)…… it is a good space to chill out with nice people when I lack the motivation or energy to do anything productive.πŸ‘

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Beachcomber66

I thought of your coffee and brownie as I wrote this post!!! But it sounds like I'm way behind in your adventurous flirting 😍SOunds like a great afternoon, but not such good news on the achilles ... These ongoing injuries are a pest aren't they! Good luck with the physio.

Beachcomber66 profile image

Thanks Linda. I have managed to get a physio booking for Thursday morning which would have been my next run day (Wednesday is swimming day). So at least I don’t have the run/not run dilemma. Icing it now. Maybe she will advise going back to Triple Chocolate Brownie πŸ™‚

Sorry you’re on the IC atm Linda ☹️ what a pain. But a bit of good news at least that you’re recovering 🀞 Fingers crossed for you.

I was able to read a few run reports yesterday while at the airport. So many fab runs and runners! Must try and read some more. I so wish I could have joined in but this week was never going to work as I’m in Ireland for my mum’s birthday and then I have the training thing πŸ™‚

As far as treats are concerned, I try to have something really good recorded on TV to watch after a really long run or race. Then, when I’m in the middle of the run I think about curling up on the sofa watching the recording and munching on crisps and drinking red wine! (Obviously the red wine usually doesn’t get a look in until a decent time. I’m not swilling it down at 3 in the afternoon πŸ·πŸ€— although at times I have been tempted….

I love crisps and could eat them (several times) every day but have now limited them to an occasional treat but mostly always after long runs and a race. Although I love red wine I’ve found I can’t drink it the same as I did when I was younger as it keeps me awake at night πŸ™„ so again it’s a treat. Yum yum πŸ˜‹

The training is going well, I’m doing weekly faartleks/intervals and I’m hoping it’ll all help my 10K time. But I’m missing my long runs ☹️

Have a great week everyone x

Linda, I'm hoping to be reading your run and race reports again very soon. Take care 🀞🀞I was going to treat myself to a croissant or donut after my 10k today. However I didn't have any cash or cards 😭 so had to head home to a bowl of muesli and strawberries, and a flat white, followed by a long hot shower.

My hm training got as far as downloading the NRC 12 week plan, so my next goal is to start the training !!!

Thanks again for all the organising and encouragement xx

After a long run (like Sunday's HM) I'm usually ravenous for a couple of days, so anything goes.

Sorry to hear you’re still not quite back from the IC yet Linda and still keeping positive too πŸ‘πŸ‘Š

I’m not running either at the moment as I try, with the help of my osteopath, to get to the bottom of my recurring ankle/lower leg injury. I’ve been shocked and depressed at how quickly I’ve put weight on and I don’t help myself as I’ve sunk to gobbling whole bars of dairy milk on my bad days.

On a plus point I did manage a swim today, and that has been my first exercise for what seems like forever, so it’s start. πŸ‘

I also went to look at a local gym this week but that was as far as I got, as my mojo seems to have run off with my legs πŸ˜‚ I still think I’ll join it later in the week and try it out for a month and review after that. 😬

Sorry folk. I’ve just read this back and it makes quite a depressing read but I needed to get it off my chest. So thank you if you got this far πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‚πŸ‘

I was going to say cake, but then I realised that in fact I very rarely reward myself with food treats right after a run. Eat, yes, but not necessarily treats, particularly since I often run before a meal.

So the real treat after a long run is transforming myself from an itchy, sweaty, muddy, bedraggled mess into a vaguely presentable human being. Ideally a lovely long shower is followed by indulgent (not just dermatologist-ordered) skincare, drying my hair properly, and selecting the clothes, perfume, earrings (or not) and make-up (or not) that suit my mood. Doesn't happen very often, takes too much time!

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathon in reply to Cmoi

Oh yes! That shower!!! Sometimes I don't get round to showering immediately, but it's such a luxury when I eventually do πŸ˜ƒ yours is next level pampering though, nice!!!

Linda I really hope you are done with the IC very soon. Sorry I am late to the table on this one. Life has been quite busy lately. I’ve been trying to continue with my same scheduled runs though the weather has been a bit cold and miserable lately. Many layers are now called for. I recently did some design work for a iron man trainer friend in exchange for some nutrition guidance. I’ve been a bit of a carb junkie most of my life so I’m going to try and get in more protein especially in the mornings. I’ve scaled back white bread too replacing with whole grain breads. But I still love anything sweet that is baked and that will never change! Especially if a strong coffee is involved.

Good that you're still running despite the challenges. They sound like some good nutritional changes - here's to reaping the benefits 😊
