Well I did it!

I can't believe I've run a half marathon and I'm disappointed with myself! I wanted it to be faster, but hey I was better prepared than last time. 😊

Well done, on your HM, was reading your post, after your first one πŸ€” once a year eh! 🀣 i'm hoping to get there, just taking it slow atm, your time looks ok to me.

The first one was last year's and this one is this year's. 🀣 It's a bit like when I came out of the labour suite with my first son. I can clearly remember thinking, 'well I hope you're going to enjoy being an only child.' I then went on to have two more!

Seriously, I was inspired by listening to Eddie Izzard on the runpod podcast. He was saying the reason people can't run marathons regularly is because they don't; they run one and then stop. I will never run a marathon, but it did get me thinking, if I don't keep doing long distances, it will always be hard (not that I found this one any easier than the first πŸ€”).

You will get there. I just ran my one long run a week longer and longer. Once I got to 16km, I went for it. Consistency is the key. Good luck!

My wife said that, then had twins! 🀣I was doing the same as you, increasing my long run a bit each run, got to 16k, a few weeks ago, slowed down a bit, with the weather, and a slight groin strain, i do prefer, longer/slower runs!

Speedy60 profile image

I like the long slow runs. I've been attacking the local hills over the last couple of weeks too.Once you've done 16km a couple of times, you are ready for a half, I reckon.

Peter44 profile image

Was thinking of another 16k soon, might stick to 10k for next few runs, then maybe push it further again, i know i can do it, just dont want to push too much, but sometimes it just happens! πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

My first one was completely unplanned, it was just a good day to keep going. I was more nervous this time because I knew what I'd set a goal and that meant I might fail. My advice would be to just go out prepared to do a long run and see where it takes you - literally. I do play mind games with myself though. This time when it got tough at about 15km, I kept repeating 'just run the mile you're in' to the rhythm of my feet. You'll find something that works for you.

I know what you mean, it's the unplanned ones, which are the best! 😊

Speedy, that’s totally fantastic, plenty of time to be happy with your next one πŸ˜‰πŸ€—

Congratulations Speedy. I was reading your response on the Spring group yesterday, so glad you did it again! Hope the jelly babies helped 😊

Speedy60 profile image
Speedy60Half Marathon in reply to dijep

Thanks. I took 11 jelly babies out with me and from 10km on had one every km. It was more a reward for makingthe distance, but t least I didn't get home feeling faint this time. I really struggle from about 17km though. It's obviously physical but I think it's also psychological. I kept remembering Eddie Izzard saying it's 90% psychological, the other 10% is in your head. He got me through.πŸ‘

Fabulous! Sorry I missed this yesterday! that's a great run and definitely nothing to be disappointed about there, shame on you for such feelings 😍!!! That's a very respectable pace for a Half Marathon it's a flipping long way!Having said that, if you fancy running a faster Half Marathon ... well, what's stopping you? Maybe not this week, maybe not this season, but one day!
