Hi,
I haven’t posted for a long time, but I’ve been around, and reading a variety of posts. I am buzzing right now and just wanted to share my achievement.
Like most of you, this lockdown has been a tough time. I am so grateful that I have had running, as something to get me out the house, fresh air, and a great opportunity to explore footpaths, roads and fields in my local area. I think I would have gone crazy if I couldn’t get out.
I’ve been with my local running club for 18months now, and more recently, one of the coaches encouraged those who wanted to, to join him on Training Peaks. A coaching plan, which uses your previous runs, to improve your speed/endurance etc. When you have a race planned, he can adjust it, to give you sessions to work on, and improve. Whilst in lockdown our coach gave us a challenge of a virtual 5k.
It has been a great way to focus on so many parts of my running, looking at Heart Rate, cadence and building up our pace. All those involved have been encouraging and so supportive, through messenger, which has been great, especially when we weren’t able to meet for normal club sessions.
Today I went out to take on my 5k. It was tough, and I struggled with my breathing, I was not going to let it beat me. I was determined to run the distance the best I could, I have run 1/2marathons, parkruns, and various distances in between. I didn’t look at my watch for speed, just to check the distance. The last 1/2 mile was a real struggle, but I pushed on.
Run over, and oh my goodness!!! Apart from feeling like I was going to fall over, I was so surprised by my time. Strava recorded it as my fastest 5k at 26:33
Never before had I been sub 27, and considering I only started running less than 2 years ago, I never thought I would run this fast.
Time now to take the pressure off and just explore again, with a friend or 2 🙂 then start preparing for my 1st Marathon next year.
