That is an interesting article. I’ll be sharing it with my run group too. I’ve been thinking about this lately too. Thanks for posting.

I'd like to know the effect of cycling too!

My take on it Linda is endurance sports are pretty much one of same thing as far as your body is concerned. Training systems and routines all seem to follow a similar path, I often read an approach for one sport and think I can use that with a little adaption.

I was wondering what consitutes too much effort though. My running is safe just now, but I wonder if a 2.5 hour ride would be considered detrimental (I don't ride particularly hard which is partly why it takes so long 🤪)

I’m no doctor but I suspect it would tie into your own personal thresholds. Ie what you are currently comfortable doing vs. pushing your outer limits and depleting your resources in a deeper way.

Food for thought. A 4 person sample in 1901 does sounds very limited. The Bath research includes comments on a different risk..the risk of catching an infection if you run in a crowd, which we are all avoiding.

I absolutely buy the J curve idea and the fact that other stresses which running suppresses also challenge our immune system..so there is a balance to be struck.

I have no plans to exercise to exhaustion (not hard for an oldie like me to reach that point!). Possibly a bad time to be trying to achieve really long distance pbs..but I am comfortable with my plan, 10k max and liberal doses of my post run chocolate brownie; guaranteed stress buster! Really interesting though, thank you. 👍

Beechcomber I think you raise an interesting point with your chocolate brownie post-run, can a J curve represent their consumption or would a Pie chart be more suitable?

A slightly different perspective.

Thanks for that. I can read these articles all day, always makes me think. If you get the chance look up Good to Go by Christie Aschwanden for some extreme recovery ideas and Play On by Jeff Bercovici on how to get better with age. Ice baths are so "passé par" what you need is a cryo-chamber!!!
