Some people have commented on roseabi 's post about how to measure your 1km speed section.
If you use Strava (either directly on your phone, or fed by your watch), you can use a pre-defined 'segment' to do all your recording for you without having to stop/start your recording as you move from warm-up to speedy running and back to cool down.
You might get lucky and find there is already a suitable 1km segment near you (use the 'segment explore' feature).
If not, you can set up your own private segment. You need an existing run to do this, but Strava will save the stats from that run against the segment you create, so you don't actually need to do it in advance of your first speed challenge run.
It's pretty straightforward. These steps are taken from the web version of Strava rather than the app as I find that easier to use:
1. First, record your run in Strava (it can be the first run of the challenge because it will record the data of the run you create it from)
2.In Strava, select your run, click on the three dots on the left and select 'Create segment'
3. Use the slider at the top of the screen to select the 1km section of your route that you want to use (this is the only fiddly bit) - it will highlight the selection on the map and show you the elevation profile too. When you have your 1km segment highlighted, click 'Next'.
4. Finally, name your segment and (if you wish) tick the private box then click 'Create'. Job done.
Now you don't need to worry about starting and stopping your watch/phone as you set off, you will get the same stretch recorded every time and Strava will tell you your stats and keep the history for that segment. At least, that's how it's supposed to work π
