Officially putting myself on the IC... :-(

So following my painful run on Sunday with my knee still playing up (despite a week of rest) and with no chance of seeing a physio any time soon, I have decided to give myself two/three weeks off from running. I will also not be doing any strength work this week either but then only limit myself to low-impact exercise/strength-work like Pilates, stretching, and working on my upper body strength instead. I'm glad that this has happened now and not a few weeks before a race or in the middle of race season so that's a positive I suppose. I'm icing my knee everyday and trying to avoid walking down hills because that's when my knee really hurts. But this is proving difficult because I live on a very steep hill and the 40 minute walk home from work is all downhill!

I am also concerned about losing all this brilliant fitness I have built up during training - this is where I really wish I had a bike! :-(

The trouble is that all bike shops are closed just now, you will just have to do exercises at home, there are plenty of YouTube videos around just now, you are correct in giving yourself a few weeks off running, luckily I have a bike and mix my exercises from inside exercises like on YouTube to walks, runs and bike rides outside.

Yeah, I have a few youtube workouts that I like so will look about for some more. When this is all over, I am buying myself a bike hahaha! :-)

Yeah I have been cycling as a child too but haven't had a bike since our bikes got stolen from when we were still living in London as a teenager! Now I'm itching to get on a bike! :-)

Cycle shops are open Al because they’re considered essential for exercise. My husband bought a bike a few weeks ago when his gym closed and I think it’s still open.

RC, you could try googling for local stockists....

The life of a runner in a nutshell Redcello. But.....you got your HM in and ran a brilliant time. I have a knee twinge too. It started after a 10km PB last week and it swelled up a bit after my "speed" 1k on Monday. Icing has really helped...the swelling disappeared overnight, so I will see how it feels today, but I am not planning to do today's scheduled run. I am no physio, but your knee seems to asking for a rest from running. I do believe in finding appropriate exercises for injuries rather than just resting them though...hard when the physio is not available I know. You will get through this...avoiding doing anything which makes things worse may be the only strategy available at present ...but knees are not optional extras for running purposes 😊

You are so right, I have my medal and race number pinned up on my medal display reminding me that I actually completed my very first HM! Yes I totally agree, still not going to run for a few weeks and only focus on exercises that do not load my knee and just wait until all this is over. Sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your knee too, it is very frustrating when things like this happen! Very wise not going on your scheduled run too! I'm going to plan on doing some youtube Pilates workouts for strength I think. :-)

That is probably the wisest course of action right now. I’m sorry it has not gotten better. Hopefully you can see a Physio at some point just to assess it before you begin running again. Are you ok to walk on flat paths? If so then maybe daily walks could help some along with your fitness routine. At least get you outside for a bit of sunshine.

Yeah I'm hoping that I can get a consultation some how with a physio before I start running again but we shall see what happens. I'm fine to walk to flat paths and uphill isn't any trouble for me either, it's literally just walking down hill that causes me a lot of pain for some reason! I think it's a great idea to go for a daily walk, it will also stop me going stir-crazy in the house on my days off from work! :-D

You're doing the right thing and the timing is indeed good. You won't lose all your fitness. When you get back to running, it will be such a joy that you won't mind going shorter distances or slower speeds to build back up - that's exactly what your knee will want anyway - and you get the whole sense f progress all over again. If you can cycle without aggravating your knee, it's a great way to fill the void, but don't worry too much about fitness. Speedy healing. take care.

Thanks! Now that you put it that way, I don't mind being on the IC so much :-)
