Shingles stopped play

Hi all

I haven't been around nor run for a week and a half due to shingles. I managed to go to work and take care of children/dogs but that exhausted me.

Luckily it was a light case, not many spots, but a few on the roof of my mouth (ouch), but the tiredness and general aches and pains weren't nice and running gave me a headache. Tried a run on Saturday and barely managed 1K.

Tomorrow I will head out for a small run and see where I get to, then hopefully I will manage my long run on Sunday, even if it's less than my last one.

This came at a particulary annoying time as I had had a brilliant run on my HM training that was around 18K and I wanted to capitalise on that, but nope, life, as always (especially lately!!) got in the way.

Onwards and upwards - hoping to resume normal service soon

Oh FitBIT, sorry to hear this. Shingles is very painful I hear, and to have that sideline your running frustrating. I hope that in between work/children/dogs you managed to rest? Looking on the bright side, your legs need a rest now and again, especially when HM training. I took a week off here and there when I was training over the summer, and always came back a bit springier.

Good luck with your short run tomorrow, have everything crossed for you.

On the plus side, at least I know why I was so tired, I was worried that it was the running!

Ouch! Hope you are feeling better now. Good luck with the run.

Thank you

Luckily it wasn't as bad as last time (I get it every couple of years) - but very tiring

Oh crikey! I hope I don't get it every couple of years 😮

I tend to get it when I'm really tired, I have sleep issues from time to time, I was hoping the running would help, lol. Proof that sleep is important for the immune system.

It sits dormant in the body and pops its head up from time to time when the opportunity presents 😒

I'm not going to like this reply :( But I will try to go to bed early tonight 😍

Thank you - I feel better today now that the spots have come out - the veil of tiredness is lifting

Oh I’m sorry this had to hit you when it did. Hope you are back in business very soon. Glad to hear the tiredness is passing.

Thanks, I feel quite a bit better today, I've also got some multi vitamins to help with recovery. I should be back to full strength fairly soon

Sorry to read this backintime - shingles can be nasty so take care to give yourself time to recover. When is your HM? Hope you are back out there soon.🤞

Thank you - I have until 1 March for my HM, so plenty of time, but I have a 13K trail in December that I need to work on hills for - I have time, but I had just come off a really great run where everything flowed, and now back to struggling again I suppose :D

Very frustrating isn't it! Lots of time to be on top for your HM in March though and good luck with prep for your trail run.🙂

Poor you. I’ve read that Shingles is really painful and having it on the roof of your mouth sounds particularly 😩

Well done on the 18K though! That’s brilliant. Those running gods have a wicked sense of humour sometimes and seem to throw a spanner in the works of our running just when it’s going really well 😡

Hope you feel better soon 🏃‍♀️🙂

It's not too bad pain-wise this time, I've had worse - the roof of the mouth was a bit ouch, it was the tiredness that did me in - getting better now though

Yes I’ve heard that it really knocks the stuffing noise of your immune system so not surprising you felt tired.

Oh no! I had it three weeks before GSR last year. I did run GSR, but at best I'd say my resilience was low 😀. We don't realise how much these things take out of us until we're fully recovered. Do be nice to yourself - you may not be ready for a long run just yet (although there's only one way to find out I guess 😀). Be kind to yourself, and try to be patient if things don't go quite to plan. Speedy recovery 😘

I'll see how tomorrow goes and adjust expectations accordingly - I think a nice slow riverside run will probably be on the c ards - it's fairly flat-ish - the air is better away from the cars - we'll see

I’m sorry about the shingles! I’ve heard it’s painful. I hope you’re feeling better now. The rest will have been needed. Good luck with your recovery and then your upcoming runs! 🤗

It hasn't been too bad pain wise but it was very tiring

Oh, bum! So sorry. i hope your run is good. So annoying when you get ill or injured during training - happened to me - but fingers crossed its soon behind you xx

Oh BIT you’re kidding. 😩 Poor you. I’ve never had shingles but I did have chickenpox when 8 months pregnant with my 3rd child, so for your sake I’m glad you were spared too many spots. But on the roof of your mouth ...... 😩😳

Take care. Your runs will be waiting for you, you know that. 👍

backintime profile image
backintime10 Miles in reply to cheekychipmunks

Yikes...pregnant chickenpox 😮 That must have been a worrying time for you. Plus chickenpox as an adult can be horrible !

I don't ever remember having chickenpox, I know I've had it but I just don't remember 😂

I was spared the worse of shingles this time. But my spots feel like you have a hair or something caught in your clothes pricking you. On the plus side, once the spots come out the end is in sight. I do feel less tired now.

cheekychipmunks profile image

Well apparently if you’re going to have CP when pregnant, 8 months is the “best” time .... not a good look though. 😅

I can imagine the irritation of your spots - you know not to touch or scratch though. You’ll be right as rain soon, and back running. 🤞😀

Oh no! Just saw this. Shingles is a bitch, my best mate had it earlier this year. She was in such pain. Anything that touched her skin was just causing such aggravation.

Hopefully you've only had a wee bit... BUT I do feel I have to say... you're more at risk if getting it again after once and it comes when you're run down... so... please do rest up fully and don't push yourself back out there too soon 😘🤞🏻

Oh so sorry to hear this FitBIT; I know shingles can be so debilitating and painful. Take some rest and TLC and come back when ready.

Thanks dexy, it's been more tiring than painful this time except in my mouth.

At least it's a 3 day weekend here !

Oh no I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s that time of year when this is rife. Sounds like you got off lightly, look forward to the next run when you’re better, and keep taking water flush it all out 🙏

It's amazing how we women still manage to take care of kids, pets and work even when we're proper poorly!

Maybe it's life way of saying slow down, to which we say...no, bugger off, we've got running to do!!! 😉

Very well done on the 18K, and on keeping the household running! Hope your energy and immune system bounces back soon 🙂🏃‍♀️👍

Sorry to hear about your shingles and hope they clear up quickly. My hubby got shingles in August when we were in France and is still suffering with quite bad residual nerve pain. Really nasty!
