Ditching the boot 🀣

I'm feeling uplifted today, so thought I'd share some of my positivity. I have permission to DITCH THE BOOT!

This morning I saw my Dr - she assured me swelling is normal even this long after the injury, some pain is also normal. She feels I could now be out of the boot altogether, but should build up use gradually. It was good to get clarification and reassurance that it's ok to keep walking on it. She is also referring me for a bone density (DEXA) scan on the NHS to see if I need the drug the fracture guy mentioned - if there's a problem then fair enough, but I don't want to take it unless necessary. For physio though, she suggests it's best to sort it privately - she was happy to refer me but, says it's pot luck who I get and it most probably wouldn't be sports orientated - in her words she doesn't think I'll 'get what I'm looking for'. All in all a good visit I think. I've just cycled without the boot and felt no discomfort. We're away for the weekend and it looks a bit far to walk to the pub and back - don't want to be hobbling the rest of our trip - so I'll be sensible and drive. Part way here I realised I've only packed the boot, trainers and flip flops! No posh dinners for us this weekend 🀣 Have a good one everybody.

You deserve a posh dinner - put the boot back on for the evening πŸ˜‰. Perfect excuse not to have your sparkling dancing shoes on πŸ€£πŸ˜‰

Thanks Sadie. It's amazing what a difference it made to how I feel. How's your foot doing?

So glad! Take every victory and enjoy it, my lovely! My foot is so much better (I dare not say completely healed, just in case it flares up again!) thank you so much for asking. I managed to run today, and am very grateful. xxx

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toSadie-runs

Brilliant news on your foot. Do take it easy for a few runs - that won't interfere with your HM training. Better safe than sorry when you're this close πŸ™‚

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply tolinda9389

Sensible advice, thanks Linda. I only have 5 weeks left now, and my longest run has been 16k, just the once! Would like to get to at least 18k before race day if I can - or do you think this is unrealistic? πŸ™ My next run is an easy 5k, so I will take that slow. xx

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toSadie-runs

You don't have to decide today whether to fit the 18k in or not. I would say you could do that run two weeks before the race and still have time to recover (although I'm no expert), so you don't need to pressure yourself yet if you think it should be nursed a bit longer. Lots of people would say 16k is a good enough base for a HM, with crowd support and race magic making the difference on the day πŸ™‚ - an 18k training run would be icing on the cake if your foot is ready πŸ™‚

Sadie-runs profile image
Sadie-runsHalf Marathonβ€’ in reply tolinda9389

Thanks Linda, that is so true. I think for the sake of my confidence, I would like to hit 18k in the next 5 weeks if I can, but yes, I will need to be mindful of my foot. I am following Roseabi's plan, that has a 16k in the penultimate week, and a week of taper the week before the actual race, so that gives me 4 weeks to get to an 18k run (if I can). :-) xxx

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toSadie-runs

Sounds like you can relax - if the foot is good enough for the HM, it's going to be good to fit in your confidence boosting 18k. Good luck 😘

Just read your post. If you've already done a painfree 8k I'm sure you're not going to have to wait long to crack that 18k. You've got this for sure πŸ™‚

Oh im so pleased for you Linda, it’s like a real weight has been lifted ( literally with the damned boot) isnt it? I remember how I felt. Just to say I also felt as though everyone I’d β€˜run’ with was passing me by and leaving me behind but you WILL catch up. Just don’t be in too much of a hurry ( I like I was ) and take your return to walking and then running slowly, build up gradually. Something like this gives you a bit of a wake up call. Makes you feel more vulnerable.

Glad to hear you are getting there though πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply tolimberlou

I will try to be sensible for sure. I do have a 10k on 7th Dec which I'd like to keep on the calendar if I can, but if not then so be it. In a way it might be quite fun to do c25k again, without all the fear I carried with me first time around πŸ™‚

Thanks Sandra. There are always other things to spend the money on, but I think it would be well worth it at this point. I think I might take out one of the Simplyhealth Active plans to help out, but must call and make sure it will be covered πŸ™‚

Brilliant news Linda, and so glad that you could celebrate in style. I bet you’ve got a big smile on your face now!

I’m on simply health cash plan and I get half my physio fees back, but I think you have to be a member so many months before you can claim. Worth looking into though.

linda9389 profile image
linda9389AdministratorMarathonβ€’ in reply toDexy5

Thanks for the info. I think that's a slightly different plan, but I will look at both types again in light of my current situation. I will try to call them this week :)

Uggh! I just called Simplyhealth. They withdrew the active plan from 1st August! I have missed it by 5 days. He who heaitates is indeed lost πŸ™ It was far more generous for what I'm after than their cash plans are. I could kick myself.
