I have refrained from going for a Valentine's Day theme this week (bleurghhhhh) and instead put up a pic in honour of Ludivine the bloodhound--it's an old story but has resurfaced and been doing the rounds again for some reason on the internet and I love it. She's so casual about knocking out a half marathon π
Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion π
If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.
Happy running, gang!

Well, things are settling down a bit I think hereβI've finally bought a house I love, though am not in it yet. It's got none of the things I wanted, at least not as an adult, but I fell for it because it's round π So I'm essentially going to be living my childhood dream of living in a turret, or lighthouse. Even the doors are curved π€£ It's a little further from my favourite route up round Arthur's seat, but only by about a km, so it should improve my training too π And let's not talk about half marathon training becaaaaause I've not done any. I am going to try a long run this weekend as I'm actually off work, I guess I will see what happens and base my approach to the race at the beginning of March on that!
What would Ludivine do? She'd not overthink it, and would have a blast the whole way round. And then she'd have a treat at the end π
What a brilliant story π. Iβve not seen it before so thanks for posting it. Glad you have found a house - it sounds amazing! How exciting π. Iβm sure you can enjoy getting back to hm training without much trouble now you have some free time. I took it easy last week after my hm, and did some shorter runs only. I did try and get back to some speed at parkrun but it was hard work in the strong wind. Hoping to get back down to proper training this week, before my next hm in March.
Hah what a great story! 1:32 is an impressive time too, especially considering she ran off and on course the entire time :).
Congrats on your new place too Sqkr! - you sound really stoked about it. It is an exciting time, especially since you are getting your childhood dream turret home! So cool.
I've been a bit off track on my marathon plan, but I've not really been on the plan in any serious way, just a framework. My brain is secretly telling me "hey man you're just doing a 30 next, not the 42 so relax dude!" Saturday was the first long run in the cold since I've been sick - (on steroid nasal spray now which is working really well) and it was not a pleasant experience. We stayed to the main roads as the side streets were too icy, and I did ok in the first stint, but it only covered around 13k and my Garmin froze at 11. The second stint of 5.5 was much harder/slower and I was done by the end. Joints all cold and stiff. The plan asked for 28km - haha, sure. I might go out later today depending on work and if the planets align. We are getting another big ice storm tomorrow, so today would be better. I may just go out for 2hrs and see what distance it comes to later on. Shooting for around 20.
Great story, and congratulations on your new house. Sounds exciting!
Iβll be resting the first part of this week after my HM, and hopefully squeezing in a Winter Speed Challenge run one evening. I might have to miss parkrun this Saturday for family reasons - it always makes me grumpy if I miss a week. π
I had a rather quiet week, taking a step back from training to rest, and also to officiate birthday celebrations. I managed to do my long run, with I found hard - and apparently I ran it really fast, although I am a bit dubious because the GPS was looking a bit wibbly at one point π
This week has got off to a rather more promising start - hurrah! π₯
I am often envious of dogs and their athletic abilities. I used to marvel at they way they would bound past me up the fells of the Lake District. Small children too - bah! π
At least with small children you know puberty will hit them eventually, that's a great leveller. I smile wisely to myself with this knowledge as they sprint past me at parkrun. Dogs are just magical bouncy things their whole lives π
Great news Sqkr....your house sounds positively wonderful! Happy New Home
I was so fed up of the blessed weather...I spent a silly amount on a new Treadmill... the weather today has been glorious and I managed my first outdoor run in ages.... ! Still behind with long runs for the HM.. but fingers crossed.. based on how I felt on my gentle 8K this morning..I feel a lot more hopeful for building up
So a couple more this week and a Park Run with some chums from Bridge to 10K on Saturday hopefully!
Things are looking up for me as I'm now off the IC. Went for a very pleasant 9k jog along the seafront in the sunshine this morning π Think I've killed my legs doing Insanity instead of running last week though - they felt like lead!
Got a pull up bar last Friday which I'm really excited about although it's as much as I can do to hang off it for 30secs at the mo π€£ There are no pushups or pull ups in army selection but if I make it to Basic Training there are and I'd really like to manage a few πͺ
Found out on Saturday there is also a 3 mile TAB in phase one - 20kgs of kit on my back plus boots is getting on for half my bodyweight! Seems a bit unfair to me but apparently I'll get extra time to complete it as I'm a woman and old ππ€£
HM at an indoor arena tomorrow ( (Espoo omatoimimaraton - DIY club marathon that is organised a few times every week for runners trying to qualify for the 100 Marathons Club!). Then a 10k and Parkrun. My HM/10/5k plan broke down last week due to a lurgy and a cancelled Parkrun
I can't compete with the house story I'm afraid. But I finally went sub 26 minutes at Parkrun last weekend, have entered a 10k running race next month and a 33 mile cycling charity event in May. I have focus again π
I wasn't able to do any of my running or skiing last week. It just snowed so heavily all week that the snow ploughs didn't manage to clear the roads or sidewalks. Then the leftovers of Storm Erik came here at the weekend and washed most of it away, leaving us with icy streets. I've haven't tried them yet...
If you want to see what conditions were like before Storm Erik hit us, check out parkrun's Facebook or Twitter feed for today (not parkrun UK), and you can see my hubby.
What a great story! I haven't seen it before, so thanks for sharing. Congrats on the house Sqkr! My husband's cousin live in a house with 2 domes connected by a hallway. It is such a neat house!
Quick update from me: I'm trying to stay positive about my silly mistake with the insoles. The past couple of weeks I've been sticking to 5k, and yes I am fully aware this is the marathon forum lol, but lots of stretching has happened. Cross training is pretty much non existent, though I have started walking during my lunch break at work every day, mainly to get my left knee back to some un-damaged state, and it does seem to be working. I'm going to try a longer test run tomorrow, probably around 7.5k, just to see if I can run that distance without a) dying and b) my knee tightening up like it has been doing, though to be fair, the last 5k was fine.
I don't think I'm going to put any pressure on myself to do the HM I had planned at the end of March, but if I'm fit by then and there are still places, then I might give it a shot. I wouldn't be fast though!!
Watch this space... I'll probably post on B210K about tomorrow's run, doesn't seem quite worthy of this forum lol
If you are training for a HM then this is the place...End of March sounds a bit tight though esp as you are recovering from injury etc. Others on here may have more experience.
Hi Lordi, you seem to have been around these forums forever, I remember your name cropping up a few times back in my early C25K days. In otherwords, I really respect your input
Yes I quite agree, I think end of March would be daft. I suspect I'll be getting back towards the distance by then, but not really trained much if you see what I mean, I somehow need to fit in some core training into quite a busy work schedule if I'm to avoid future injury I think. I am feeling much better though, so I'm still aiming for HM, just maybe not in March!!
On the other hand if you feel good and have trained up to 16/17 k then you could slow jog the whole HM (be a completer) and walk 100m through each water station to get some recovery. Provided the entry fee is not too steep / ramps up closer to the date you could leave the decision to the last minute? The problem is that entering and paying is a great incentive to get out and do the training!
Brilliant news on the house front Sqkr , sounds very exciting.
I'm tired this week. Taking a rest today Not sure that's worthy of posting really, but it it as it is! I did a long run on Saturday, no ill effects Sunday or Monday, but since then my legs have ached all over - I'm putting it down to going back to work full time on Monday after just over two months off (gardening, so lots of getting up and down all day) Hopefully the legs will feel stronger tomorrow, but if not I might just rest tomorrow instead of my tempo run - won't do to turn up to the Hyde Park 10k on Sunday looking like I've left my stick at home!
