I did πŸ™‚ Dog walkies and gym today, oh and a short run later

I spent hours on the plot for the past two days but feel ok for it. I think it was the gym that did me in 🀨

Will do my 5k route for this week's summer speed challenge then finish my Asics tapering by the book. HM Sunday and it's a sell out.

Last week was the second above 40 miles after the luxembourg marathon (which was only 4 weeks ago). After the intervals on Friday (5X800mt + 1000 mt recovery 400mt jog) and the tempo test on Sunday (with times that I didn't record since the early 2000s...) today was the last serious training before tapering for the half marathon in Lisburn (Northern Ireland) on the 20th:

interval training repeating 3 times 800 + 1200 with 400 mt jog recovery. It was a painful training but in a good way. I managed all the three 800 mt. below 3' and all 1200 meters around 3'34, which is a pretty fast going just below 3'50'' per 1000 mt.

I am now officially very tired (with 3 hard training sessions in 6 days) and starting tapering for the half marathon, with many doubts on what to do during race day (attempt a rational PR or try something more taking some risks?). I have a week to think about it.

happy running everybody

Have not done many runs in the last 3 weeks since my HM as legs felt a little bit broken (tho no injury as such). I also have had an eye on not buggering them up before my 2 weeks "holiday' of HM walk/runs in Spain (just about to head on out of the door to the airport). I will start in Logrono tomorrow and try to cover about 30km average per day for 12/13 days to reach Leon. Will run when I feel like it but aim to run about 8-10km every other day and just walk on alternate days. Weather not too hot there at the moment so should be good. I'll be uploading to Strava as I go. This will be the first part of my marathon training (Tallin Marathon 9 Sept). Note to self: don't drink too much vino tinto the night before run/walk days ;-)

Edit: Forgot to say that my first run will be a 1km sprint from Logrono bus station to the pensione/hotel to beat their last check-in/closure of 23:00 tonight! I've got the google maps route memorised and might need to do a 05:30 km! All good fun.

Hi all

Looks like I will be running in the rain for the rest of the week from tomorrow... Last night managed a 10.5km hilly route up to one of the wine farms in my area (Zevenwacht) not feeling very comfortable thanks to blisters on both feet...

Tonight I will be pushing to improve my 5km time trial time at my running club, hopefully the wind stays away till 7pm. They are predicting a big storm tomorrow with gale force winds so not sure if I will attempt to run in that although I planned a 10km run... maybe good to rest the feet & blisters until Saturday, my first trail race (15km) and rain predicted of course :D

Any advise for the beginner trail runner? I will try my best not to fall ;)

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to DiveMonkey

Not falling, and not running in gale force winds, are both good ideas :)

When trail running be sure to stop every now and again to take in the view - you need to take time to appreciate your surroundings, but you also need to really concentrate on where you're stepping, so it's best just to stop!

Also, take time to practice running downhill, and be sure to work on total body strength.

I just read this article about blister kits, which seems like really useful advice. Unfortunately a lot of the good stuff they mention is not available in the UK (so maybe not in SA either) - but I will probably be paying over the odds on import websites or Amazon to get them, as the blister struggle is real on the trails! Especially when the feet get wet :(

irunfar.com/2018/06/trail-f...

I got that link from a website called Ultrarunner Podcast, which has a weekday news page with lots of articles about trail running. Well worth a look in my book! The podcasts are good too, although I personally find the guy's voice and mannerisms annoying :)

Brilliant! Thanks roseabi I will follow the links!

I normally just pop the blisters and keep them clean - try to dry them out...

I tried running with plasters on Tuesday night and it almost made them worse (except on my toes). Last night I tried a free sample I got at a mountain biking event called Squirt barrier balm, almost like vaseline but thicker. I have tried it before for chafing (thighs & bra straps) but it was so thick it didn't help much - normal vaseline worked better. I covered the entire blister area and bam I ran my time trial without feeling a thing and got a PB :) Now I have to find a place that sells this in a bigger container...

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to DiveMonkey

Interesting! Is it this one?

fitsportslab.co.za/squirt-b...

Have found it on amazon UK, bit pricey so I'm leaving it to stew in my 'saved for later' list for now :)

I've been having trouble with downhills and hot and/or wet weather giving me blisters on my toes, affecting the nails. If tmi sorry! But it's a very common problem in trail running. Very painful, and difficult to treat on the go, so preventives of this sort are very appealing. I have bought some new shoes too, hoping they will help...

DiveMonkey profile image
DiveMonkeyMarathon in reply to roseabi

Yes! I tend to get blisters on my metatarsal close to the big toe area thanks to my pronating right foot... I am going to see if they sell some more of the balm at the race tomorrow. I found online that a store about 15 drive from where I live sells it for R150 (8/9 pounds) on special so if I don't find it cheaper at the race I might just go get it there.

Are your shoes not too small?

Yay! New shoes!!!

I normally wear a 3/4 shoe but go one size up (more than that now thanks to the asics cumulus keeps getting narrower... started with 17s as a 4.5, 18s a 5 and now just got the 19s as a 5.5...). My Pergrines 8 are a size 5 so hoping I don't loose any nails... So far I have only lost one nail and that took forever to fall off!!

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to DiveMonkey

I think the problem is more to do with dampness, and shoes that are too loose around my heels allowing my feet to slip forwards. The new shoes have a much better fit, and yes plenty of room in the toes - so I'm hopeful :)
