Lidl and Aldi sometimes have them very cheap. It's where I got mine.

It is meant for cycling, and has a big build-in bum-bag, but it works quite well for running. I pop my beanie and gloves in the back if I start to overheat.

It's worth remembering that more heat is lost through the head than anywhere else, so maybe you just need a warmer hat.

Thanks for that.. I have hats... winter and summer ones... thermal beanie in winter and my trusty cap in summer... I am a hat fan :) I think since I am a lot lighter than I was... I feel the cold a little more...I will check at Aldi and Lidl... I have got quite a bit of running stuff from there.. but have not seen the gilet.. !

Thank you x

Hey Oldfloss

I’ve got a karrimore running jacket that you can remove the sleeves. It’s not padded but cuts out the wind, and is versatile doubling up as a rain jacket too.

I also find that gloves help me - if I’ve got warm hands then I’m much happier. Mind - I’m then often trying to peel them off part way too and wondering what to do with them!!

I hope you find something suitable. Roll on spring!! 😁🏎

Thanks you..it is just my body...I wear a hat..and buff ..and gloves...my lightweight jacket wasn't enough today...I think I got colder walking ..waiting for the satellites for my Garmin!!!

Being cold when I Run is not one of my problems, but I do have a gilet that my husband picked up in a charity shop - it’s a Ronhill one - probably a cycling one really as it is bright neon yellow 😁

Thank you.. I have just been looking at Ron Hill ones.. I have two lightweight wind and rain stoppers and they are brilliant... but not warm...!

It was warmer here today, but I’m struggling with getting chilly on my longer runs too Oldfloss . My only suggestion about gilets is that if you mean you want a padded one then try to get one with synthetic fill rather than down. If it’s raining, or you do start to sweat, then down will lose its insulation properties, and drying the thing later won’t get them back. (They do sell expensive “hydrophobic” down now too, but even that isn’t generally as good as synthetic padding if it may get wet.)

I’d wondered about trying a gilet, as I thought it would feel less restrictive, but I’ve found that my arms tend to suffer most with the cold, so having no sleeves would make no sense.

Another option to add an extra sleeveless layer could be to try adding a short sleeved synthetic T shirt over your long sleeved thermal top and under your running jacket? Good luck optimising your layers - I’m still working on it! 😊❤️

I was thinking less restriction. I have a padded gilet but it is too bulky.. and my Rab jackets are for other things..I never had this issue before... but I carried a bit more weight then...!

I got very cold this morning... and in hindsight which had put my heavier Reebok jacket on!

Yes Oldfloss I’m finding that my rain jacket isn’t quite warm enough as a second layer but I hadn’t thought of a gilet. I have been borrowing a full zip mid layer fleece from UTS. I only needed it while running into the wind today and then tied it round my waist. I think what I need is something similar but in thicker Lycra . I’ve seen others wearing them but haven’t spotted one in the shops yet. Another reason to go shopping again . Good luck with your hunt 😃🏃‍♀️

Good luck with your clothing experiments!

Do you wear a thermal base layer?

Oldfloss profile image

Yup!! I am not sure why this has suddenly become an issue..

I run hot and sweat like a horse at any pace, so a rain/wind jacket an running shirt and thin hat are fine for me (even at minus 6 last Sat Parkrun). Good for me eh? Well, what I wanted to say is I do a lot of hiking (and camping out in winter here in Finland) and it is a well known fact that if your head is warm your metabolism gets tricked into opening up your capillaries (generally but esp in the feet area) so wearing a good warm hat keeps your feet warm even when camping out! So wearing a good thermal hat might help some if you are a cool runner, without the need for extra clothing?

Thanks for this.. but do I wear a thermal hat.. I would petition for hat wearing for in winter if I could.. by .everyone; in fact just got a new one yesterday! :) I shall crack this one... thank you...

I love camping too.. :)

I wear two hats sometimes, or a buff under my cap to protect my ears is good - I usually end up pulling it down because I get super-heated, a gilet would be terrible for me! 😊

I think I may just be under par..normally my hat..buff gloves etc keep me toastie!!

Hi Oldfloss, So you already have a thermal base layer mentioned by Katnap that sounds like a running specific item. Do you also wear a thermal vest? I have had the same one for oh! crumbs! Years and years perhaps 40!!! Don't need to wear it too often, so perhaps that is why it is still going. I see it has the old M&S St Michael's label in it and was made in the UK, so no help for buying the same one, but an idea. Probably, you already have two thermal layers. I do hope you manage to find a way to keep warm. 😊

My husband bought me the £9.99 gilet from Decathlon. I posted the pic up before crimble It’s super lightweight but windproof. Zips up to the neck, small front pocket but a huge zipped pocket round the back. I wear my Aldi merino, then the gilet, then my lightweight cheapo hooded run jacket. I can remove my jacket and tie it round my waist if I get hot and bothered

It’s patterned but quite transparent so the colour of your top shows through 🙂

It’s still on sale.
