New to this particular forum. Just completed my first 10k this week but have signed up for a 10 mile race in March. Looking for inspiration and advice from all you expert runners on how to progress towards my first goal of the year xx

Hi Oggy! And an enormous and inspirational welcome to the forum!!!

You have plenty of time to increase your distance. I suggest you have a look at a calendar and plan your progression. You could increase gradually and give yourself a good solid base, or perhaps do it more quickly to give yourself more time to get used to the distance before the race. If I were you, I'd also want to look at some maps and plan some different routes to keep it interesting. Also, check the race route to see whether there's anything special you might need to train for - hills, for example 😊

Most importantly, have fun with your runs, and keep us posted!!!

Hi. I ran my first 10K this summer and my first 10 mile race in October, so quite similar. Unfortunately I was ill for the three weeks leading up to the race, so it wasn't my finest hour, but that was just bad luck!

I did it by sort of extending ju-ju's magic 10k plan - a short run, a medium run and a gradually increasing long run. It's not that much further than 10k, but the usual gentle progression rules apply and you have lots of time for that.

I'm now aiming for a HM and have introduced some speed runs and some swimming/strength exercises too. I think this has made a huge difference, so if you have the time it's worth trying to add in some extras between runs :)

However you do it, make sure you enjoy it - you'll find lots of experience, support and encouragement here!

Thanx for the comments. I'll have a think about them after the new year and a couple of consolidation weeks, then make a plan. I did notice the difference doing the strength exercises so I'll keep up with them too. Thanx and happy New year xx
