Just read Steve Kendrick’s (aka Berksrover) intro post on this forum and thought it was a great idea and I should do the same. Have made a few replies/comments on here over the last few weeks, but never actually introduced myself - albeit I know some of you from the C25k and B10k forums of course!
Steve is one of my VRB’s (“Virtual Running Buddies”) 😀 and my story is very similar to his, albeit he is a bit younger, fitter and faster than me 😉
So here goes...
I retired at the end of last year and decided to get fitter. Playing golf 3 times a week, and doing some hiking, and decided I should also try running. So in mid-April bought myself a treadmill and started C25K.
Ventured off the treadmill and into the great outdoors in May, graduated at the beginning of June, did my first 5k (on the Isle of Skye) a few days later. Then started ju-ju’s “10 is the Magic Number”, quickly racing through the gears to reach 10k. Yesterday was my fifth 10k run, and this time managed 12.5k in total.
While the distances are improving steadily, I have yet to do a 5k in 30mins (current PB is 32min, so 2 more minutes to shave off), but expect that just to come naturally as I continue with my focus of running longer distances and steadily improving strength and speed. Routine is typically one weekly long run, plus two shorter/faster runs.
Signed up for Cardiff 10k in September with my two “proper runner” sisters, after that (assuming I enjoy that race experience) I may take the plunge and sign up for a HM, to give myself a new goal/challenge.
Like Steve and my other VRB’s, you’ll find me on Strava (Ian Wallace).
