Well, I am now a marathon finisher. I completed the Paris Marathon on Sunday and, as I am sure all finishers know, I feel incredibly proud of myself.
42,195km is a long way but the atmosphere and crowds help you along immensely and you certainly feel sympathy for the wounded on the side of the road.
The most difficult part was training over the winter and fighting through the ‘Beast from the East’, only to turn up in Paris to a beautiful day hitting 22 degrees, I have never drunk so much water during a run and I certainly enjoyed the large cold beer I forced down at the end.
For me everything seemed to be nicely organised and I didn’t experience any problems with the collection of the bib, travel, left luggage, food/drinks, route marking etc. All in all a really (un)pleasant day!
My immediate reaction was never, never, ever again but I already find myself thinking, what if 'next time'… - I must stop this insidious, creeping, masochistic need!
Well done to all finishers and best of luck for London on the 22 April.
Congratulations! 22 degrees must have made it even tougher and I'm glad your experience was better than agedsnailspace who is still waiting for her medal!🙁 Masses of respect for anyone who takes on the challenge of a full marathon and it sounds as though it may not be your last....!🙂🏅
Thanks miss wobble, and thanks for your and healthunlocked.com/user/Rig... 's advice a few weeks back on another post about ignoring the gels and sticking with the natural foods, dates, dried fruit etc. Much nicer and softer on the stomach!
I did try a gel in the marathon as I had no drink left. I choked on it for ages, it really made me cough and it came back down my nose, and it was vile.,the texture is bleugh
I make power flapjack too, recipe from irishprincess on here, and tote that in my jacket pocket. I had so much of it that it was causing me to list and I had to jettison it. I got it back afterwards though 😁
Well done! An amazing achievement! The weather was hot last year too when my son ran it. Warm weather makes it harder I think. Well done, and good luck for the next one!
Amazing! Well done. It is amazingly insidious- I am beginning to be jealous of all you guys running great distances. I never thought I would say that....
You can too. It’s just down to training. Slowly, gradually going a little bit further. It’s fun as you never know where it will lead. Just get out there and lay down some Miles
If i’m Unsure about a track or lane etc I might recce it with the dog first.
Don't forget that all of us who started on the C25K began with 60 second shuffling and 90 seconds of walking repeated for 20 minutes - it all begins with those little steps!
You are both right of course, I now know I probably could... it just seems completely insane that an (still technically) obese (very nearly in the overweight category, having lost two stone!) person who a year ago could not imagine why you would ever want to run(!) and who started C25k because she struggled to climb a hill in holiday(!) would now be thinking that it would actually be something I would find fun...!!! Seriously, what a change!!
