One foot in the door.

Hello all, thought I'd poke my head round the door lintel and say hi. Still working on consolidating at 10k but planning to start stretching the distance out a bit. Not planning a HM event and I prefer decimalisation :) so am hoping to build up to 20k over the next 6 weeks by increasing my 10k run 2k at a time. Does that sound like a reasonable plan?

I prefer decimal distances too, forever translating...

I did one km increases and found it quite tough. I got well bogged down at week 7. I think I got stuck there for four weeks if memory serves. Be prepared to be fluid with your plans

As usual, take it steady. Cross training takes on a new level of importance as you go longer 💪😃👍

Most of all, have FUN. it’s going to be a blast 😁

I still find 5k harder than 10k at the moment and that is all down to getting the pacing wrong. I'm hoping to do 12k on my next long run, so will see how that goes :) I have no plans as such, so it's definitely fluid and as I am not planning a HM event, all I want to achieve is to see how it feels to go a bit further. I do have a 10k event at the end of april planned and I do hope that by increasing towards 20k will reduce the event fear a bit for that :)

Morning Pink. 12k was going to be my next long run....along the Thames Path....but that was before this pesky hamstring injury 🙄

Sorry to hear that Ted. Have just read your post about it. I have only experienced aches so far rather than injuries so I'm still a bit scared of them :O

A fast 5k is harder because you have to try and cram so much into a short distance, so no chance to really hit your stride before it’s over

Longer distances are far more satisfying. You can really get into your stride and maintain it (sometimes, depending on terrain) and find time for a proper warm up and cool down without it having to be frenetic as with 5k. Thinking Parkrun scenario 🙂

So true!! Well I have done my sub 30min's 5k in my last run so i'm putting that little gremlin to bed and now it'll all about enjoying the longer runs. And I definitely don't want to get caught in the trap of chasing the sub 1hr 10k :O I did get to 63mins but I need to be very firm with myself lol, so hoping by trying to run really nice and easy pace to stretch out the distance it will stop me getting silly.

Welcome! I live in a metric country, so I increased my runs 2k at a time, and it worked for me.

you are most welcome here.... that sounds sensible and stick with the 10% rule for weekly mileage too. The only thing I would add is allow a week or two for a bit of consolidation, rest, things that happen in life etc... Keep us posted!

I prefer decimalisation as well ... in most other areas of my life I'm slow to embrace metrication but I like the idea of getting more kilometres than miles!

Well hello! Nice to see you sneaking in here too. I knew you'd find it hard to resist. Well done on the 12k!

I think I'm a bit like you - not really seeking to train for a specific event but more about getting to grips with the longer distances.

There's a Vatican/Rome Half Marathon for Peace in September than I was interested in but I am a bit concerned about the heat (in September it's still hot here) and it does seem that the participants are all very serious - it'll only be the second edition but last year the "slowest" finisher came in at just over 2 and a half hours :O I don't think it is wise to feel I am competing with Swiss Guards twenty years my junior.

Also the summer may be tricky for training for me, what with work, heat, and the 3 and a half month school holidays. So, we will see - will review my plans later but don't want to be fixated on an event to the point of taking the fun out of it.
