Who is running Great South Run?

Who is running the GSR in October? Where are you at in your training programme, ie what distance have you got up to, how many runs a week and any other training you do in the week? Thank you!

I'm running the Thames River HM in late October, and am training with four runs per weeks - two slow and gentle, one intervals and one long.

Hi, I ran it last year and loved it! I have always done just three runs a week, although I know I did quite a bit of cycling last summer in between too. I did a lot of training during the school holidays as I work in a school and had lots of free time then! I built up my own training plan because I wanted to do a couple of 10 milers before race day, so essentially had to bring forward a lot of the targets that you will have. I know most training plans don't work like this which is why I have always done my own. You still have loads of time to be ready for the GSR - and I think, if I'm right you are following a programme so I am sure all will be fine! It really is a fantastic run and I had it down as one I wanted to do again this year. Sadly this year I am just returned from an injury which left me with nerve damage in one leg (😮) so am only on 5K runs at the moment! Really good luck with the rest of your training. You can do it!🙂

Thank you that is very useful information. I haven't committed to gsr yet, it seems like an ambitious task although I did find a virtual 10 mile for October if I don't do gsr. I am on my asics and I will modify that plan to slowly increase distance rather than jump from 6.5 miles to 8.5 miles etc. I do run twice a week with a third parkrun every other week so 2 or 3 runs. Mondays is 4.5 miles ish and Thursdays is 7 miles and increasing, then a 3 mile parkrun on a Saturday. I am doing some stretch/strengthening on non run days. I am concerned I am not training enough for gsr in October. 7 miles is ok but I need to find more leg stamina for further or will that just happen?

Sounds like you are doing really well - keep clocking up the miles and that strength and stamina will keep building too!☺

My brother paulb67 and i should be there, though we haven't booked up yet, and Boz too. A lot of our club go from here on the Island so its usually a fun day out(this will be my 3rd year) Frank-ntj is going and in training with his grandson! We met up with quite a group of us last year :)

If you're up to 7 miles with 7 or so weeks to go i reckon you're well on track! I've done a few longer runs lately so just need to keep it up , got a HM in the new Forest this time next week!

I think you can book up fairly late for the GSR one, if i remember from last year. Though i did worry whether my race pack would turn up in time! :( Hope to see you there! :)

Thank you, your previous race report was very interesting to read. I am at 7 miles but need to see how the increases go over the next few weeks! I need to consult hubs and the kids at some point too, it has been my secret lol. I would like to have run 10 miles before the event! Good luck with the new forest hm next weekend.

Thankyou! :) It is a great event and the crowds carry you round to some extent. On my 1st 10 mile race(a hilly one over here) i had only got to 9 miles previously. Sounds like you are doing well though so don't rule it out! :)
