Has anyone had successful cataract surgery with high myopia along with BRVO? I'm due to have surgery at the end of September but know that it is more risky in very shortsighted people. Also added complications with having a retinol occlusion. I opted to go to Moorfields because of their good reputation. Had my consultation yesterday and was told the extra risks but the doctor reckons it should be done. I am bit anxious though and hope someone can reassure me. Many thanks.

Cataract surgery
hi, I have macular oedema and retinopathy in both of my eyes. The right eye has had lots of injections. I had my first cataract operation last year and it was my worst eye, the tight one , which is also very shortsighted. Unfortunately there was a slight problem in that a fragment of the cataract fell behind the eye so they couldn’t complete it. They gave me lots of drops and a week later I had a vitrectomy where they removed the fragment and then put the new lens in. A bit worrying at the time but it was all sorted. The second cataract op went very well and had no problems. It has helped my vision a great deal.
I hope you don’t have any problems but a lot can be rectified.
Good luck
Thank you for replying so quickly.Reassuring to know that your problem got sorted. Sounds quite scary. I think there are risks with all cataract surgeries. Best wishes.
Hi. I have pathological myopia with CNV in the right eye (fibrosed now) & now have CRVO in the left for which I'm receiving injections. I also have mild MMD in left eye.
My CNV was treated too late to save central vision as at the time treatment was not available for other than AMD on the NHS. I had it treated privately in the end after appeal by my consultant but by then it had done it's damage. That was in 2012. I then had a blip & stall for pre-cancer treatment. (unrelated).
In 2013 I had right cataract surgery as it was less risky for the first op than the left which I was now dependent on for central vision. That went very well. I had the surgery under general anaesthetic to minimise risk of retinal detachment. In 2014 my left vision had deteriorated to the point that it was cataract surgery or blindness. I had the surgery under general anaesthetic & again it was very successful. I went from -16 in the left eye & -14.5 in the right to -0.25 left & -1.5 in the right, which was an added bonus. My sight had remained stable although my retinas showed all sorts of deterioration (& i no longer drove at night more recently) until early this year when I developed CRVO & lost central vision in my left eye (scary!). Injections have restored my sight enough to return to driving during the day & I still have some reading issues but not too bad.
I hope this is an encouragement to you. I was told initially in 2011 that they wouldn't operate on my cataracts because my myopia was too severe. My surgeon was brilliant in successfully treating the cataracts & giving me better vision as a byproduct.
The future is not bright for my sight but I am grateful.
I hope this helps.
Hi there I hd my first cataract surgery in June. I am a high myope with DMO, and narrow angles with phacomorphic gluacoma so it hd to be done. It was high risk with girded prognosis. I had mine done at St Thomas’ and they were brilliant thy new the risks and hd complications even during the surgery but they were well prepared. I had it under GA. I needed a specialist in glaucoma which is why I hd it there and have been there for years for that. All has been fine. For two weeks after wards I was on 17 eye drops a day. The only issue is that I have more fluid in my left eye. I was seen the next day then the following week the. 2 weeks after that and then 3 weeks after the last appointment. I wish you well. I am pleased I had it done . I have no more central vision for to the DMO so I am still 3/60 but my pheroperal vision is better.
Thank you all for your encouraging comments. It seems well worth having the surgery despite the risks. Wiil let you know how it goes.
I have wet AMD in one eye: I have injections for this. The other eye is fine! I had both cataracts done, and the improvement to my vision is little short of miraculous. All surgery has risks. For me cataract surgery was so successful it far outweighed any risks.
All the beat!
Ooops! All the best
Hi Kateanne. Have had high myopia in both my eyes. Went for Cataract surgery for one eye last year. By God's grace, it went well.
Will be going for my second eye operation soon. Vision is better. No complications.
Wishing you all the best for your treatment.
Thank you trips11. May I ask what your eye strength was before surgery and how you coped between the 2 surgeries. Because of my high myopia they want to do my second one a week later. Hope you don't mind me asking.
It was -17 in the operated eye and -15 in the other. Used to wear contacts before. So was able to manage with contacts in the unoperated eye. Doctor had advised me to wait for 1 eye to stabilise before I go for the other eye. Hope this helps.
Good luck. I have a BRVO in my left eye plus raised pressure in both eyes with macular odema. I would be interested to know your progress.
