ANTIBIOTICS AND EYLEA INJECTION ARE THEY COMPATIBLE?

I may have to have a course of antibiotics from my dentist at the same time or close to an Eylea injection.

Is this OK or can they affect each other? Should there be a time space between?

Many thanks in advance

Hi peacegarden,

Yes, it's fine taking antibiotics. They won't interfere with the injections or vice versa at all.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have read some posts where they ask patients if they have had antibiotics in the last two weeks before injcection. I find some of the posts confusing. Again thank you very much

I've had both Eylea and Lucentis over the past two years (I feel more like a test guinea pig) but the only things I've ever been asked have all been covid related.

A week or so into December I picked up a bug and was given antibiotics, I even rang the hospital to check it was ok (I always do if I'm unsure so I don't waste an appointment), I was told "that's fine, as long as you are and have been clear of covid the last two weeks".

The staff nurse didn't ask me what the antibiotics were for or what they were.

The same happened August before last when I had a gum infection.

I like to know more about what's going on than I'm told so I did a lot of cross referencing and confirmed what the hospital said, so the only thing I can suggest is to ask them why they asked about the antibiotics, if it's only specific ones and why aren't everyone else asked the same.. Or a staff member at your opticians can write the questions down, ask the optician then call you back with more info.

I had a tooth cap come off and replaced and it has caused a swelling on the base of the gum of the capped tooth which I assume is an infection..

The swelling has almost gone but as I have not experienced this before and I want it checked out.

I am not sure whether I would get antibiotics from the dentist and how it may affect my eye injections due next month.

Did the antibiotics cure your gum infection?

Your reply was very helpful thanks again

If you see a dentist and they notice or diagnose an infection, they’ll give you a prescription to take to a pharmacy. If you have the infection after leaving the dentist’s they’ll ask you to see your doctor for antibiotics.

Firstly around 2017 I had a upper back tooth removed which somehow left a hole from the gum, going up the side of my nose to my sinus. I’ve been seeing a hospital specialist since as he thinks this could happen again if I have any more upper teeth removed. The problem I’ve been left with since the tooth extraction is that that space keeps repeatedly getting infected, so even after losing three quarters of my sight, I still have to take antibiotics every one to three months when the infection flares up. My doctor prescribes those antibiotics.

The August gum infection was from a chipped tooth digging into the gum. The gum and surrounding area were inflamed by the time I saw the dentist so the dentist prescribed antibiotics that time.1

Dear peacegarden,

As an example, the following is an extract from Moorfields eye hospital patient information leaflet on injections:

moorfields.nhs.uk/sites/def...

"Can other medicines or food affect

anti-VEGF treatments?

Anti-VEGF and certain other

medicines can interact with

each other. Some patients have

developed a serious eye

inflammation when receiving

treatment with both anti-VEGF

and verteporfin

(Visudynephotodynamic therapy

(PDT).To avoid this, tell your

eye doctor about all the

medicines you take, whether

prescription or non-prescription

medicines. This includes blood

pressure medication, warfarin,

aspirin, and vitamins. You must

also inform the doctor if any

medication has changed

since your last visit."

Kind regards,

Rosalyn

I had my first 15 injections in 2022. This website is very informative and people seem very caring. Thank you for the very helpful and kind link to the PDF explanation of the Eye injections.

Hello,

I have had LOTS of dental issues in the past 3 years, with EIGHT courses of antibiotics. My retina specialist has not been concerned and placed no restrictions on my 5 years of Lucentis injections. My oral surgeon is not concerned with the eye injection medications affecting any dental work or antibiotics. But both always DO ask about new or changed medication - I assume THEY are the ones who know about any interactions or concerns.

Just always keep your health care professionals informed of all health issues. Good Luck!

Linda
