Interpreting the results

Despite having had AMD since 2017 I don’t actually understand some of the terminology.

“OCT indicated right eye drusen and pigment epithelial detachment with no intraretinal or subretinal fluid and left eye pigment epithelial detachment with subretinal and intraretinal fluid although reduced compared to the previous scan.

VISUAL ACUITIES (LETTER SCORE) Right eye 87 (6/6) , left eye 62 (6/19).”

I’d appreciate interpretation of italicised words.

Been successfully treated with Eyelea but after a mini stroke in May had to wait a bit longer for injections to resume. Both eyes had been good up til then but left eye had a bleed which meant I had every four weekly injections for it but I feel although improved, needs one extra injection to catch up with right eye. Do you think it’s worth asking?

Thanks in advance!

Drusen are accumulations of extracellular material that builds up usually between the Bruchs' membrane and the RPE (retinal pigmented epithelium). The Pigment epithelial detachment (PED)is when this layer is lifted up usually from drusen (drusenoid PED) or from coroidal neovascularization (wet AMD).

You can get more information from eyewiki.

I so agree with you catseye. I thought I knew a fair bit about macular but often find myself puzzled by terminology. Also didn’t realise that macular like a Layered sandwich and depending on which layer is bubbled makes a big difference to how they can inject. In reply to your question I always think it is worth asking but often find it difficult to not feel like a nuisance when they are so busy. I think i need to get over that. They can only say no!all the best.

Someone suggested WikiEye but that was as bad. I want simple explanation. Yeah I think they’ve been doing so well during lockdown this past year I feel reticent to make any demands. Thanks for the encouragement Shimano!

Ok so Drusen are like rubbish the bin man left behind. This rubbish can build into a mound and lift up the layer above , PED.
