What help can my partner get he's registered part sighted. Blind in 1 eye and only shadow in other. Visual aids couldn't help at hospital. Thank

Hi, I dont know what visual aids the hospital tested him with but there are smart glasses not available on the nhs.

My hubby was for years told he had no useable vision in right eye but since problems with left eye he's found he can see bits with right one!

The smart glasses may not work for yours but the company we used (visionaid.co.uk) will check first over the phone and based on his answers if they think they have product that might work will offer a free demo of different ones no obligation. It cant hurt to ask.

The RNIB has one type of the glasses on their website and the mac soc were advertising a trial of one from a different company so they're a legitimate product classed as a medical device.

The RNIB helpline should be able to advise generally.

If hubby is of working age check out the government Access to Work scheme too. I'm going to be doing that today for mine

hi oldwood, my hubby has now just been certified partially sighted and I'm told if you inform your local social services and register with them then they send someone out to see what practical help can be offered.

it may not be of use for yours but it includes specialist optician services for " complex lenses" specs which cant be offered on the High St ( ie you have to be certified). From what I read we can get a voucher towards the cost, not means tested.

I hope you have applied for all other benefits to which he and you are entitled, I certainly will be!

Also I didn't know we could get any help from anyone else or benefits.

Who should I enqired too. Nobody at hospital gave us any info.

Hi, the doc who's certifying my hubby told me the special optician should get in touch automatically and social services should ask if he wants to be registered which opens up a lot of things they can offer ( you say yours is registered but I wonder if something got missed).

The doc certifies him, the local social services register him. Try calling your local social services.

I googled " partially sighted benefits" and theres a link to RNIB info: home, sightloss advice service , eye health , registering as sight impaired " scroll down the page.

There was a good pdf on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists link but it's an rnib doc and quite old so might be out of date - lists different benefits though so a good thing to have when ringing Gov. I think

I struggled to find gov tel but this might be it 0800 731 0469 DWP work&benefits. I haven't called yet.

Also the web has links to macular society info, and lots more. The nhs has a vision loss page too.
