Showering and Exercise

Hello all,

I had my 1st Lucentis injection yesterday and was wondering if anyone could advise how soon after I could have a hot bath/shower/wash my hair or go for a run/exercise??

I don’t want to do anything that might cause unnecessary problems with my eye.

Thanks in advance

Hi emma. I am always told to be careful not to get any soap or shampoo etc near my eye for at least a couple of days afterwards. I use a cream to cleanse my face and am very careful when showering. I wash my hair a few days later but always keep my eye closed. Check on the Macular Society web site for their recommendations for after injections.

Thank you for your reply ☺️will look now

Yes, what springcross said x

My clinic says infection risk for 5 days so i take it easy.

I use dry shampoo if im desperate but again careful with eyes.

Definitely no swimming for a week.

Avoid dust or rain in eye so outside running probably not a good idea for a few days at least ( unless you wear swimming or ski goggles maybe??!! Dont think id want to get sweat in my eyes though Lol x if i go out for fresh air I wear overspecs that have side pieces ( cheap from Coopers of Stortford catalogue but might not suit if you have poor vision as theyre tinted).

I may be paranoid but i also have fresh clean towels and bedding for after inj.

Welcome to the club!

Wow - gosh, I’ve not been given any of this advice, just told not to rub my eye 😒

Yes, the comms from clinics does vary......

They usually give out some sort of leaflet though with advice and a contact number if you have any problems in the first few days.

Its important to avoid infection so whilst not taking things to the extreme and living in a plastic bubble a few small lifestyle changes for a few days has got to be worth it. X

Hi Emma I was only told not to swim for 5 days but I am more vigilant. I read an article from the Royal Berkshire Hospital (not my Hospital) where the ophthalmologist recommended not doing anything which might raise dust like gardening, housework etc as well as not washing hair for a few days. I do not have iodine either so am extra careful especially in the summer with my lawn bowls which I don’t play for a week. Not that I’ll be playing this summer by the look of it. Best wishes

Wow! I've had 40+ injections. I use the drops the hospital gives me for a day or so, carefully wipe my face the first night and next morning, and after that, nothing. I do an hour in the gym daily, and use dark large glasses on public transport on way home from hospital to avoid dust, other people's fur collars, umbrellas and generally to let people know to give me space where possible. I don't shower on the night of the injection or next morning - in the evening .

Thanks so much everyone. I had a quick bath last night and kept my face/head dry and used wipes to cleanse before bed. Have showered as per usual today and washed my hair keeping my left eye closed and protected. Only went for gentle local walks locally (keeping 2 meters from anyone re social distancing) and all seems well.

The only thing I can report however is my vision in that eye has changed. It’s neither particularly better or worse - it’s just different. It was completely blurry in the end, before I had my injection and now it’s tinted sort of yellow, with patches that seem clearer but when I close my good eye, what I see from my injected (left eye) sort of squeezes a little? Is this normal? Like a gradual change is occurring.

I will ring the triage centre tomorrow to double check, it just seems odd tbh 🤪

in reply to emma1210

Yes defo ring clinic.

It might just be the effects of the inj working / you 'seeing' what you couldn't before due to the blurriness.

I get text 'squeeze' eg text looks like txt when my oedema is worsening so maybe you've had the effect behind the blurriness all along?

Best to get checked though. X
