Hey everyone!!

I'm really interested in your favorite tech/app/aid you use on a day-to-day business to help with sight loss, something that if it wasn't something at hand, you would struggle!!

Please post your stories below

Thank you :)

On my MacBook I have a skin that fits over the keyboard. It has white background with large black letters. Without this I would not be able to see the keyboard. I also use the built-in Mac accessibility, to make everything very big to see. It's not perfect, slightly unstable but without it my Macbook would be useless.

On my iPad, I have the built in magnifier. Good for reading emails. I use my iPad for TV as I'm unable to see the big TV, less than 10 feet away! Also use my iPad for reading, both Kindle books and library books. I always use the night setting. White print on black background much easier to see.

Thank you, Bobbie! Where did you get the skin for your Macbook, it sounds really useful!!

I'm glad to hear the accessibility settings have been of use t you - was the magnifier on your iPad part of the iPad or was it a separate app you have installed onto the iPad?

Hi Becky, I am fairly sure that the keyboard skin is made by Logic. It was a couple of years ago I bought it. Ordered it on the Apple site and picked it up at their store. Having a quick look at Logic, it looks as if they now also have black background with large white letters. The magnifier I use on the iPad, is part of the accessibility program. You can choose to have it permanently on the "desktop".

I am green with envy of those watching Wimbledon. The highlight of my year. On iPad I can see them running around but no fun if you can't see the ball!!

Hello Becky - In my day to day I use

Computer-wise:

Large screen monitor on my PC which is a Dell Inspiron all in one desktop with touch screen - also inbuilt magnifier.

A TAOtronics adjustable arm light which is also touch controlled.

A mobile phone set on maximum size for text & brightness.

+

Several types of magnifier around the house. (supplied to me free by the local Sight Support Group). I was put in touch with the Group via the Eye Clinic I visit where they usually have a representative present to assist.

A headlamp to help with reading in poor light conditions.

One or two sun visors which I wear both in and outdoors to stop glare on bright days. These can be bought quite cheaply (from £1 upwards) on the internet.

A pair of anti glare yellow wrap-arounds to wear over my normal glasses both in and outdoors when necessary. (also supplied free by Sight Support Group).

As I am an artist & can no longer do artwork as I used to do I bought an A4 size magnifier on an adjustable arm, which sits on my worktable, to enable me to see detail.

Hope all the above helps. Until you asked the question & I started to list items I didn't realise that I had accumulated such a lot of aids in the past two years.

Regards.

Hello again Becky - just to add to the comments I sent recently about visual aids. I know that Judi Dench has AMD so am always keen to see how she copes with it in the media. On a recent tv documentary in Borneo I noticed she used a small pair of binoculars quite a lot to assist with long distance vision - I shall now get a pair to add to my aids. Cheers
