Black patch in the dark

Hi everyone am myopic with 10 degrees my problem started a week ago i wake up noticing a black patch which disappear in few seconds and never bother me in daytime just when i wake up in the dark or first in the morning i did dilated eye test and oct and all came up normal whats the problem then ?

I too am myopic and have issues associated with this which I have written about in previous posts.

When I have been in a place with subdued lighting and come out into bright daylight I sometimes see dark spots in front of my eyes in my central vision, also sometimes when I wake up in the morning and put the light on I see the same spots. Been happening for years and hasn't altered.

Could be a similar thing. If you have been checked out by an eye doctor and given the all clear I shouldn't worry. If you read some of the posts on here you will realise we experience some very strange lights and spots and things Myopic eyes particularly so.

It’s more than a black patch and it fades gradually whenever there is light and it freaks me out whenever I wake up sometime at night and open my eye and see it there !

I'm not surprised it freaks you out. You have my sympathy. Anything affecting our vision is unsettling. What did the doctor who did your eye tests say it could be?

I did oct test and dilated eye test and everything seems normal....my doctor says it may be floaters or the viterious moving but i dont think so 😉

Hi Mays76. Do get it checked out with an ophthalmologist. I have wet AMD. It sounds similar to what I experienced initially, and this turned out to be a scotoma. But don't let me alarm you!! Get an expert on the job, and get a second opinion if necessary. Or even attend an eye clinic ASAP!

All the every best! Treatment for these conditions is v. good nowadays, but needs to be prompt.

Hey there ...am in my late thirties and cant have this in young age despite that i did oct test and show nothing everything is normal though 😔

Hi Mays76. When I go to bed in the dim light of the bedroom and look up at the ceiling I see a different shaped black patch with either eye. I don't know if this is related to what you are experiencing or not. The black patches do not take up my whole field of vision by any means; they just appear as irregular black shapes of maybe 6 or 8 inches in size on the ceiling. I have thought of them as some sort of projection of floaters in my eyes. But I don't know how that would work. Bottom line is that I really don't know what they are. But they do not appear during the day, or in brighter light. I haven't worried about this. Perhaps I should.

Sounds so close to what am experiencing but i did dilated eye test and oct test and all come up normal and no explaination yet to what am having 😔

I've had these for about 2 or 3 years now, they don't get any worse but only occur if I have been in bright sunlight so are present mostly in summer, like you they only appear in the morning or if I wake in the night. They are probably there in lower light as well but because the ambient light is lower are not so pronounced. I also have trouble coming from bright light to low light or looking into a dark area whilst in bright light. I find a torch helps with this.

I had a check up in the eye clinic and mentioned this, they couldn't offer an explanation but thought they might be floaters ( don't think they are), other than that my eyes were OK, I've recently had a diabetic eye screening, there is some eye damage but nothing to worry about.

Perhaps these blobs are one of life's great mysteries, after 2 plus years they don't concern me anymore.

Well i can see the patch whenever i open my eyes in the morning but it vanish once i look to any light source ..strange !! I did dilated eye test and oct test and it come normal i dont know what is that 😐

Hi Mays. I can’t be sure that what we are seeing is the same but I see black spots in the AM. I can also see them if I blink rapidly in lower light. I have CSR in both eyes and have had several reoccurrences of it. I was told that the spots are scaring from where the fluid leaks occurred. They also make me nervous but they do not change in size. I can tell when I have a new pocket of fluid by blinking in the dark because active spots are black with a white ring around them. I hope you eventually get an accurate answer to your specific issue. JimGlanDwr Your comment describes my exact symptoms. I have this grey area at the center of my vision that disappears in a few seconds, most noticeable while waking up in dim light. I can also see it while blinking fast. I also have trouble going from bright light to low light areas and I see bunch of black spots at the center. Did you ever find out what it was?

Hi Mays76, this sounds like what I get In my left eye in the morning. A dark patch which quickly fades through gray to nothing and doesn’t present during the day. I have CSR in that eye and the doctors think the dark patch is related to scarring on the retina from previous attacks.

Hope you’ve not suffered any more symptoms.

Hi. Just wondered if you still have the black blobs in vision in dark or waking up ?? I have had the same for a while now. I am very myopic. Had scans at hospital and was told nothing wrong with my macula. Any news ?

I too see a black patch, or Scotoma, similar to that described by others, which disappears when moving from darkness to light. I've also had AMD for past 4 years but have experienced the black patch for at least 20 years. I also experience, infrequently, flashing zigzag lights, called a Scintillating Scotoma, similar to a migraine, for same amount of time. I've discussed this with opticians & opthalmologists many times over the years with no real answers or solutions apart from my having a severe sensitivity to light.

Hi I too have that black patch appearing In morning and takes a minute or two for it to fade while I look at light.i went to eye emergency dept the other day .all they could see was pvds .I am highly myopic also .They said no macular degeneration.i also had OCT and I went to opticians for an optomap scan and nothing .it's scary .I have to get a vitamin a test done as I could be deficient and that could be causing it .I feel like vision dimming and hard to see at night
