Dark spot in vision on waking up

Hi everyone, the last couple of mornings I’ve noticed a dark spot in my vision when I open my right eye. It’s quite small and vanishes in a second, like it’s zooming straight away from me. It’s really noticeable as I’m still staring at a white pillow.

I have CSR in my left eye, so I’m used to the dark patch that quickly fades, but it’s not the same. Neither is it like the floaters I have post PVD.

I’ve recently had my eye test and can read the bottom line of the chart and the Amsler grid looks fine.

Anyone have any ideas or had similar. My next appointment at the Eye Hospital is 6 weeks, so not sure wither I should call them for an earlier one.

Hi Ramsayn,

Yes our advice is to contact your eye hospital and try for an earlier appointment, preferably asap. If this cannot happen, please go see an optician instead asap

Thanks,

Becky

Thanks Becky, nothing is ever as simple as it should be. Can’t get through to consultants secretary and the hospital don’t accept self referrals to their acute referral centre. Optician went on holiday yesterday and GP Surgery can’t get me a Dr to speak to till tomorrow morning. Hopefully they will be able to get me an urgent referral.

Thanks again for the advice.

You can visit any high street optician to test your vision.

We don't often recommend seeing a GP as they tend to have limited knowledge on the eye and referrals to the hospital from them can be very slow

Nothing for tomorrow but booked in for 9am Thursday for a full eye exam including dilation and OCT.

Hey ramsayn - did the docs ever give you any insight into what’s going on with the dark spot?

Hi, the optician couldn’t see anything during the eye exam and the advice was unless it got worse mention it at my next hospital checkup in August.

It does seem to occur only in particular circumstances, waking up in very dim light while looking at a close up bright surface.

Got it, thanks for the update. I'm headed to my specialist tomorrow to talk about this and I'll update you with whatever I learn. I'm located in the states and see a neuro opthamologist at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, which is supposed to be top notch... so hopefully they'll have some helpful info.

Stay strong, friend. Remember that we are all tougher than whatever's going on with our eyes. 🙂

According to the doctors it’s a symptom of the damage done by my CSR. It doesn’t have any effect on my vision as it only lasts for a fraction of a second on opening my eye. I suppose in almost dark conditions that’s the spot in my vision where I have a blind spot.
