Shadow-like ovoid disc moving quickly through vision in very dim lit conditions.

I have been experiencing this symptom since I was 19, I am 23 now. Only apparent in very low light conditions such as my bedroom when I am going to sleep. How I describe it is a black opaque shadow-like disc “pulsing” through my vision; starting from central vision and moving quickly throughout the periphery and disappearing if eyes left open more than a second. But will reappear if I keep my eyes closed longer than a second and then open them again. The “disc” is not perfectly circular but more ovoid in shape. This symptom is present in both eyes independently, however more apparent in the left.

I came across this page looking for people with similar symptoms and reading on some threads that it may be a side effect of macular degenerative scarring is unsettling to say the least, especially at my young age.

I have also been experiencing objects that stay “imprinted” in my vision longer than they seem like they should. As well as distinct “afterimages” when looking at a moving light in a dark room. For example moving my brightly lit iPhone screen across my field of vision, almost like the tail end of a “normal” light trail is slowed downtown lagged behind. Wondering if any of you have experienced this symptom as well or if these symptoms may be caused by something else.

Thanks

Hi

The best advice I can give you is to go to an reputable optition for an eye test. They will be able to look into the back of your eye and find out if you have any retinal problems or any other eye condition, if it is just to put your mind at rest. Never delay if you have any concerns. Better to be safe than sorry!

I too have the symptoms you describe, but I do have MD and receive treatment. I cannot remember any such symptoms before my eye problems started, but perhaps I was just not aware of them.

Good look. let us know how you are getting on.

Thanks for the reply. I have been to a neurologist and 2 different neuroopthamologist so far for other eye-related symptoms and none have mentioned any sign of a degrading macula upon examination. I never thought to mention this symptom as it didn’t feel significant but I realize now that was an obvious mistake, so I will call back and mentioned it to the Dr to see what he thinks. Maybe it’s so early on in it’s onset that it would not be detectable upon a visual examination of the macula or in retinal scan.

Did you find out what it was? I have the exact same symptoms and I'm the same age- I went to a retinal specialist who said he couldn't find anything on the macula and in a retinal scan. What other symptoms do you have?

So did you find what was the reason for this symptom.I kind of have it too. It's happening only when i'am going to sleep and close my eyes for e second and then open it.I'am experiencing this since a month ago and i'am 30 years old at the moment.I olso find that the hard light(like looking at led bulb at home or sun reflections when outside for a second) disturbed me and see ofter images after look at them.I'am sorry for my bad english but studied it only for an year at middle school.

Not what you're looking for?
