Hi All,

Thought I would give you an update on my mum, who has been struggling with MD since Christmas. You have all been wonderful on here with me, pointing me in the right direction and giving me wonderful advise but I am afraid all the advise in the world is not going to help my mum now as she was diagnosed a week ago with terminal cancer of the kidney and spine.

She is doing well and the nurses have been great with her (she is deaf as well as having very limited eye sight) but they have been told off a few times for assuming, because of her sight, that she needs feeding and her tablets put directly in her mouth instead of allowing her to do things for herself. She soon put the straight and they now no longer assume that just because she is partially sighted she is helpless.

I am now getting used to the fact that I can do no more for my mum but would just like to thank all the lovely people on here for helping and guiding me in the right direction as far as her MD is concerned.

Good luck to everyone on here with the journey.

Thanks Rosy, I think she is coping better than her immediate family and keeps telling us of for having sad faces.

No, no regrets as I know I did the best for her health wise, not only with her MD but with her thyroid illness, her pernicious anaemia and her very low Vitd. She was making remarkable progress with all the other stuff but losing her eyesight seemed to finish her as she lost her spark for life.

You, and others, have been a constant source of information and support for me on here and I thank you very much for that.

So very sorry, Moggie. What can I say? It is hard to find the right words. Your mum seems to have been a feisty lady. Old age is cruel. So sad that it has come to this. But you know, as you get older you can accept the inevitable better. I know as I am 80 myself, and although I am still comparatively well I live every day as if it were my last - and it may well be. I am not fooling myself. It is part of life. Be easy on yourself. You have done all you could for your mum. Bless you both.

Thank you so much for those kind words. I think my mum has been ready to go since Christmas (when she got the MD diagnoses) but, as you say, she is a very feisty lady and although her mind is ready her body is yet to get to that stage. She keeps saying that it is fine living until well into your 80's if you are fit and well but when it all goes wrong it is not a nice position to be in.

She is keeping the nurses entertained in the hosp (think of Kathrine Tates "NAN" and you have my mum, without the swearing I must add) and a care plan is being put in place for her to come home but it will be 24 hour care as the spinal cancer has paralysed her from the waist downwards. She is happy enough, getting lots and lots of company and is well looked after by everyone at the hospital so we cannot grumble.

Wishing you well on your journey and thank you again for all your support.

Everyone who has read your posts will be thinking of you just now and wishing you well in these hardest of times. It's good to read of your mother's continuing strong spirit and I hope the family can respond in the way that she wants, with many smiles. It sounds as if she's going to 'Fight, fight, against the dying of the light' - in all senses.

Thinking warmly of you and your dear mother. XX

Thank you so much, kind words like yours are what is keeping me going at the moment. We have been warned by the hospital that she will not bow out any time soon and, as long as she is not in pain and is still enjoying her family, we will have a few more months of family time together.

Thank you Mary. My mum is making the most of the time she has left and is still ordering us all about.lol. It also gives her time to put her house in order and say what she has not already said to people she loves, which is what she has been doing since she was diagnosed last week.

Your kind words and good vibes will keep me going.

Well she is definitely not suffering at the moment, she is eating like a horse (apparently the steroids she is taking do this) and is very cheerful. I really do think she has had enough and is ready to go as I doubt she would have ever got over her loss of sight. Being totally deaf was bad enough but to then lose most of her sight was the final straw for her as she couldn't watch telly, couldn't read a book, couldn't go shopping without difficulties, and so the list goes on.

Thank you very much for your support and well wishes, the people on here have been totally amazing and I cannot thank them enough.
