Hi shasl

I am classed as steroid dependent this happened after I had a stomach virus and vomited for 16hrs solid!!! A&E injected me with anti emetic and put up a saline drip (a life saver as it turned out) did blood tests and everything else they do. I was monitored for a few hours and then was able to take the prednisolone dose I had missed and was told to go home and return if I started to get worse again. I was very ill for a week but at the time did not know why.

I was fortunate enough to see my endocrinologist a week later and described what had happend and how I had felt, Hubby had to fill in most as I was not aware of most of that day even the A&E visit, he said straight away that it had been adrenal crisis and that even though A&E were unaware of what it was that they had actually done the right thing by putting me on a drip and raising my blood pressure and replaced vital salts and minerals, he arranged for me to see the specialist nurse who sat with me and Hubby and explained what to do in an emergency issued me with an emergency kit and gave me sick day rules she also told me that I would get to know when I needed the extra steroid dose. That was three years ago and since then I have stuck to the sick day rules and have managed to avoid the emergency injection. I was lucky I didn't have to go into ICU or hospital for any length of time. I know it's a very frightening time but there is support for this you just need to know where to look. I was told to go to pituitary.org.uk/ and then if you need to know more to look up addisons disease I think there is a link from the the pituitary website.

Hope this helps you

Yes, it was awful. I was in the middle of Tescos and couldn't remember what i was meant to be doing. Felt dizzy, hot, sweaty, breathless and soooo thirsty. My back started hurting, then I began vomiting. I later discovered that it was caused by tapering my steriods. I had a test done by the endrocologist who confirmed its addisions. I now have to watch my steriods timetable like clockwork. If i am starting to feel unwell, it is usually because I am a little late in taking the steriods. My body is dependant on them and I hate it.
