Hi,I know how you are feeling. I have had times where tears have been rolling down my face whilst I'm on the toilet. I also have a bit of a weird symptom when I start feeling the need to go, it sounds silly but my temperature shoots up sometimes 2/3 degrees (have used a thermometer as I thought I was going nuts). I Senna every day. You could try asking for softeners. If I take lactulose I get the exact opposite. Its the morphine that causes it and Iron well known cause. I eat oranges and bananas. I don't have much milk as I makes me go so I also have milk when I feel I'm getting bunged up. Think about your diet, is anything you eat a trigger like me with milk, you could utilise that trigger by eating it at the start of a bout of constipation. It might take a day to help but I find it works

In brief: 2 dessertspoons of sauerkraut every evening, glass of prune juice every morning. Water intake makes no difference to me. Lactulose just causes wind and more bloating, dreadful stuff. Senna when required, occasional glycerine suppository, bisocodyl (Dulcolax, OTC) in dire need.

See a good naturopath (e.g. Dr Franziska Meuschel). She sorted me out when 2 eminent professors of gastroenterology couldn't. She did a stool test first which showed ZERO good bugs, sorted those out with natural antibiotics and probiotics.

Good luck!

Hi Coppernob, Where is your Naturopath based? I saved a cat's life once, when several vets and animal hospitals couldn't find what was wrong with it - despite stool tests. All it needed was access to the plants/herbs cats chew to get rid of parasites. Wish it was that simple with humans ..perhaps it is?! It's back to basics for me. xxx :)

Like Coppernob, I have sauerkraut every evening and I have 2-3 prunes (soaked overnight) with my morning porridge. In addition, I take a probiotic tablet 15-30 minutes before breakfast - together with a pint (or more) of warm water (..cold doesn't do the job). I have found that if I don't have enough 'morning water' I feel more achy and tired that day - having Sjogrens, as well as lupus, may be part of me feeling better with more fluids.

At first, you may find sauerkraut a 'sauer pill to swallow' ;) but give it a try and you won't regret it. I even take some with me when going somewhere, even for just an afternoon picnic ..my tummy loves it! I suspect a lot of ill health is due to digestive problems.

Thanks to homoeopathy, I no longer get '8 months pregnant within minutes' after every meal. According to TCM, 'rabbit droppings' are a sign of imbalance in the digestive system. The stomach and spleen/pancreas systems need strengthening (TCM= Traditional Chinese Medicine).

I think using mainly organic products is part of my much improved health in the last year. We can't avoid all the chemicals (including medication) in our environment but to avoid what we can control goes a long way.

The pain and feeling sluggish all the time, from constipation, really drags us down. I hope you do find something to relieve you ..soon (sorry about the pun ..couldn't resist!) Good luck! xxx :)

She used to be there but she left. I believe she does one day a week at BioLab in London. Email her direct at dr.meuschel@btinternet.com. Say Judy Hartley recommended her.

Someone else once recommended slippery elm tablets too. Haven't tried them myself but worth a go perhaps.

Me again, :) Just want to say that by grinding linseed with sunflower, pumpkin and sesame -seeds and having 2 full tablespoons with porridge (or yoghurt, soup, juice etc), you get the recommended daily intake of omega 3 & 6. Grind 1dl of linseed and 1/2dl of each of the other three seeds) approx every 7-9 days. The mixed seeds keep well in a glass jar in the fridge (I avoid plastic). I also have some grated apple and 2-3 prunes (soaked overnight) and a small handful of raisins with my porridge (made with water) - is a great breakfast ..or should I say brunch! ;) xxx

Oh dear I can so sympathise. I have chronic problems because of my codeine. I've tried allsorts in the past and now my GP prescribes Bisacocol (Dulcolax) but that didn't necessarily stop the hardness and pain. I've recently found Dulcoease (Tesco) to soften and take one to two daily although you can take more, and the bisacodol on alternate nights and they are fabulous.
