hi does anyone know why or what happens if you calicum is very low?
Tracyxx, I don't know about the short term effects of low calcium, but in the medium to long term, it can cause osteoporosis.
I looked it up on google, you might find this link helpful. I had a high dose of vit D for 4 weeks earlier this year as my level was low. Calcium wasnt mentioned but on Cushings web site it talks about the vitamin as treatment and this is what it says about symtpoms
"If for some reason the calcium level falls well below normal, important symptoms can occur. For instance, muscles tighten up (especially if under repetitive strain), and painful muscle cramps and "pins and needle" sensations may develop".
If you have concerns you should talk to your doctor
Hello Tracyxx
This is a tricky question and one best asked of a specialist.
As well as the obvious bone stuff, Calcium is involved in muscle contration, and a lot of nerve activity including the brain.
Calcium levels, uptake and disposal are linked to other minerals such as potassium and phosphates,
I think that you have some homework to do in order to get a clear answer, but you might want to get a friend to go through this with you, You as a patient and sufferer may not be best placed to take all the information on board. ( I say this from exerience rather than as any judgement of you)
Good luck.
There should be answers from the blood tests then Tracey...hopefully...thats how my low count showed up. The consultant did a specific test for vit D as she thought that was the problem. Will you let us know how you get on?
