lupus itching

hi, I am a 32 year old woman and was diagnosed with very mild in July. I was given hydroxychloroquine 200mg 2x day and ever wince starting the medication I am experiencing horrendous daily skin itching, crawling, tingling, burning sensations. Mostly on my arms and legs, lasts from 10 minutes to hours and it’s impossible to focus on anything when it is happening. Nothing eases it or helps it. I have noticed it mostly happens after showering or when clothes touch my skin. No rash, hives, redness, dry skin, scales can be seen. So it must be something internal. Has anyone experienced this and do you have any advice e please I am desperate.

I had something similar starting hydroxchlorquine but it was the medicine it was lupus on arms reacting to indoor lights/ heat I had hives felt sick.

That stopped after short time

Any pain chest

Fast heart

Dizzy

Blood pressure up.do check those and throat closing because that would be I'm sure you know drug reaction .

Nice to meet you - and sorry to hear this; as I've written before on this forum, the Big Itch was how I was diagnosed with lupus - nothing to see, just the worst itch I've ever had, all over the body. You do need treatment: a 5-day course of steroids and a course of the antihistamine Fexofenadine generally settles it, and I use Dermol500 or Aveeno on my skin (if only to try to counteract the scratching). Good luck!

Hi, I can completely empathise.

I have SCLE and urticaria vasculitis, and get really bad skin rashes and itching., to the point where it feels like it takes over my life. I’m taking hydroxychloroquine, high dose fexofenadine and montelukast regularly, but at times, these are often not enough to hold the rash in check, and have to resort to oral steroids. I also use dermovate regularly.

Keeping my skin cool when the rash is hot and stinging is essential :

I keep gel filled cooling mats (for pets in the summer) in the fridge, and use these to cool my skin when it’s flaring. It’s a massive help.

I saw a different consultant at my last appointment, who advised keeping my skin very well moisturised, and trying to reduce my use of dermovate. In all honestly, it’s helped, not particularly once my skin is flaring, but I’ve had fewer episodes of flares since following this regime. I use Adex gel, centraben and anything else I have handy.,

Good luck 🤞
