Thanks Gloomy , Iโm good thanks, how are you doing ? Xx
I have to say I have been better. Got a phone appointment with my GP tomorrow. I have, and she agrees, classic symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. Problem is my bloods are coming back satisfactory. Very low end of normal. Thing is where I live they donโt test for non functioning B12. This is when the B12 doesnโt work properly but itโs still there so doesnโt show deficiency in blood tests. My health board also wonโt let you have a B12 injection to see if it works. Will see what she says tomorrow. Xx
Sorry to hear that Gloomy, my friend has B12 Deficiency so has injections for it- you would think you would be allowed to try the injection to see if it eased your symptoms, hope your GP appointment goes ok tomorrow x
Hi
Would it be worth asking to be tested for intrinsic factor antibodies and gastric parietal cell antibodies? A positive test would confirm poor absorption of vit B12.
Itโs quite a simple and inexpensive test these days. Good luck
Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately I spoke to my GP before seeing your reply. Didnโt really get anywhere. Kept saying I do it have B12 deficiency and she doesnโt know what to do now. Agrees I have all the symptoms but negative bloods. I mentioned functional B12 deficiency again but it was brushed aside. Believe this is because my health board doesnโt test for it.

Sorry you are having this problem. Unfortunately GP's know very little about B12 deficiency or Pernicious anaemia, similar to their lack of knowledge of thyroid problems. I was told, wrongly, that it didn't matter that I had no Intrinsic Factor!(really!). I hope you can find an educated doctor.
Hi
what does your GP mean by โnegative bloodsโ. Does this mean youโve been tested for IF and GPC antibodies??
I donโt know much about functional B12 deficiency tbh. Does it mean that your B12 blood levels are normal but you lack the enzymes necessary for the vitamin to enter the cells?
Imho your GP needs to talk to someone haematology? ๐คทโโ๏ธwho understands vitamin B12 deficiency so that you get some useful advice.
Good luck xxx
In functional B12 the levels are normal but there is a problem with the proteins that carry the B12 between cells. My GP has spoken to someone in haematology and, in short, they donโt want to know. Said they saw me ten years, yes ten years, ago and did tests then! Couldnโt have tested for functional B12 deficiency as the test is not widely carried out and isnโt done in my area. Really donโt know where to go from here. Xx
Okies. Tricky one!
So, your blood B12 levels are low/normal? This could still indicate an absorption problem, ie IF and/or GPC antibodies are preventing systemic intake of B12 from food as it takes many years for liver supply of B12 to be depleted. If this is the case intramuscular injections of B12 will be helpful
If you lack the enzymes responsible for intake of the vitamin into cellsโฆ ๐คทโโ๏ธ๐คทโโ๏ธ๐คทโโ๏ธ Iโm not sure B12 jabs would help
Let me know if I can help in anyway, xxx
Hi GloomyEeyore, note my diagnosis is Stills Disease which for me manifests as Rheumatic disease however new symptoms being investigated led me to read HU Thyroid posts where EVERYBODY gets private tests regularly and then shows GP the results in order to advance their case and treatment. I donโt understand exactly why this is but if a small spend on a private test helps itโs worth it. Check out the posts there. Good luck x
Have missed those adorables dogs! I know what you mean about the smiles. My chihuahua can do nothing more than push his mousse toy under my nose to make me crack up.
Hope you are feeling as good as possible.
