Mobility scooter advice

DogsMakeLifeGood profile image

Hiya, I am quite young and have put off getting a mobility scooter as I was so worried what others' thought and neighbours etc seeing me! I realise now it actually would enable me to do some things and accept illness better. We have 4 steps to the path to our house, i have been looking at foldable scooters to carry down the steps or a boot scooter I could put together on the pavement, which seem good as the battery is often the heaviest bit at 10kg. I wouldn't be able to lift anything too heavy.

Do any of you have any advice on a lightweight scooter that fits together or foldable? Are there any like this that would manage grass if I could ever go with my husband for a dog walk or is that only the big terrain ones that I couldn't put together because of our steps?

Thanks so much, any recommendations would be so useful as there are so many

I have, but have not yet used, this:

My husband bought it shortly before he fell and couldn't use it and then came Covid. It is still in its original packing but I am about to get it sorted out so I can use it with the VW campervan I have just indulged in!

However, it looked fairly impressive when he tried it out at the shop and the videos show many large people using it and I'm pretty sure I saw some with it in even grass - don't think it would do real off-road. I had a google on Youtube!!!

Wow that is really helpful he is zooming on the grass and tracks still! Looks like I could join my husband on that one!

It does actually have a trailor I think, did when we got ours, and also a second seat you can hang on the back!

It was such a shame that it was really a bit late when OH decided he'd get it. It was autumn so too cold for him, then as I say he fell, followed by lockdowns and he was steadily deteriorating so never used it.

I have a chap coming to me this week for a demo so thank you so much for telling me about this scooter. I am hoping I might be able to take it apart and push it into the back of the car myself. Also I love that you have s campervan! Sounds fabulous

Hiya, I've tried travel scoot, a scooter that comes apart into manageable pieces to lift and an efoldi. I'm leaning towards efoldi lite as it folds like a suitcase with wheels and I can get it up and down the steps outside. I cant lift it into the car but it does fit in the passenger footwell without the wheels. I like that it folds up and I can wheel it if I went in a shop or hairdressers and easy to put into a friends car.

I think it is important it is the one that fits YOU - good luck!

Hi there I thought long and hard about a mobility scooter and what would help me most. For my lifestyle I ended up going with an all terrain scooter but it’s not one of those huge ones. It’s great on grass and mud, gravel and cobbled streets. However it’s expensive new (secondhand ones are available online if you search), it also has a habit of throwing you forwards if you’re going too fast downhill, so you have to get used to “driving it” so to speak. The size of the seat area is snug, I’m a UK 14-16 but I wouldn’t want to put on any weight with this chair! It’s already a tight fit. It fits in a small SUV boot but it’s too heavy for me to put in and out of the boot on my own, so you do need help with it. I like it, it’s not perfect but it does mean I can also use it to go shopping in to if I need to. Although for me it’s those long walks or days out that it’s most useful for. The smaller fold up scooters do not cope on mud, grass, gravel and uneven surfaces well, they don’t have the stability. They are good on flat ground like pavements and shopping centres. So it really ultimately depends on what suits your lifestyle and what you want it to do for you. My electric wheelchair is designed by an ex F1 engineer and it is a game changer but like I mentioned has its flaws. Hope this helps you make a decision 😊
