Does lupus affect tendons

The. Last few days I have been having pain in my Achilles. Today while taking my dogs for a walk, I managed about 100 meters and had the most intense pain in my Achilles’ tendon. I had to stop. Have any of you had similar experience. Do you have tips or cures. I am currently sitting with legs up and a large whisky in hand. A it’s Xmas, B it’s medicinal and C I’m feeling sorry for myself.

I had this a couple of weeks ago.Got the most excruciating pain shoot through my heel when i hit it on a chair.since then heel bones mishapen and painful plus underneath heels is like a cushiony pad/also nerve pain in my left foot.Unsure as whether Lupus or Pagets Disease. All GP said was "heel pain can be many conditions"!!

Yes. I get it in my Achilles and forearm tendons, sometimes jaw too. Feels like rubber bands when they get inflamed. NSAIDs usually help me like naproxen or ibuprofen. For forearm one, I usually use a brace for a week or two. Achilles I have to stay off of until the pain abates. I get them bad enough that I get tendon friction rubs. Was one of my first symptoms gone unnoticed long before diagnosis.

Hi Jmiller63

I too am suffering with the inside area of my right elbow , painful and sore , weak and crunching sound in tendons when moving .

Painfull even to type and brush teeth .

Can I ask what brace you use that helps ?

Something like on the picture. The stiffer the brace, the better. Any give in the brace defeats the purpose but also may limit functionality.

You should see my hall closet. I've got ankle, arch, elbow, knee support, wrist, and a back brace. A couple Mondays back my puppy bolted when I took her to the dog park. We stepped inside the first gate, I asked her to sit so I could lock the gate. When I wasn't looking she bolted and down I went. I bruised my hip, side, and scuffed up my knee and elbow. I utilized the knee brace for a day, and currently the back brace off and on. Thank gawd for muscle relaxers. I missed three days of work.

Now my jaw was paining me a week or so ago. And kept clicking. Interesting. Thank you

Sometimes you can push on the joint and it’ll stop clicking. Miraculously I also notice that I somehow land on the tendon, specifically, to make it stop. Also, I have to really love any caramel that I eat. It has to be worth a jaw click or two.

Hi. And yes. Mine is chronic and requires a lot of babying and expensive shoes. Nothing helps it for long but I wish you luck with yours. More whiskey?🙄

I have it in my left achilles about 95% of the time, I've tried pain killers, gel and resting it and nothing works. I just use a support bandage. I did ask rheumy about it but he just shrugged.

Funny how our rhuemy's pooh-pooh everything.

We had to take me off my immunosuppressants earlier this year (for unrelated reasons) and I suddenly started to badly damage tendons without any obvious accidents. I ended up with three areas of inflamed and damaged tendons that will require at least a year of physio but I'm about 9 months in & now off crutches, back at the gym etc.

My consultants were confused but physio thought it was lupus & as we reintroduced a new immunosuppressant I stopped damaging new ones. There seems to be some research to show a correlation between tendon damage and autoimmune but they don't yet know why. Definitely drink up & get a physio referral ASAP in the new year.

All the best xx

Please do not despair Ianflashdavies,

I have had both cortisone injections in both ankles which relieves pain.

Along with custom fit insoles with Orthodontics. This is a great help in my Sketchers. Important to change footwear.

When needed, I used frozen veg in a tea towel, place my ankles on. Daily I use Volterol gel, on ankles, shoulder, etc This soothes......I could not live without!

When I have a flare up, I have Night time splints to keep Achilles tendon stretched

The main thing is to Always wear ankle support socks, these work a treat. I would not leave home without them.

Some days, weather will affect ankles more. On these days, rest and have a hot bath. Also please try to massage ankles when in bath, with soap.

Stretching exercises to make life bearable

Well I hope, your whiskey 🥃 is kicking in.

Sending Lots of Christmas Wishes that you find Strength to push through

♥️

Thank you. Yes the whisky worked wonders. Lol. Support socks probably won’t work for me as my feet and ankles swell. Anything tight aggravates this. But will give gel ,massage and stretches a go. And maybe another whiskey. I will push through just feeling low, I’m only 56 but with all this feel 106.

Sometimes my Achilles tendons hurt and tightness extends into the bottom of my calf. I know that I could tear something if not careful. When it happens the tendon has a noticeable bump on it.

I use Voltarol gel over affected tendons when I wake in on mornings and take things carefully until tightness goes. Started this autumn.

Mentioned to Rheumy who ignored so I assumed it was not connected..

but seems that a lot of folk are experiencing tendon issues, so guess it is connected.

I'm careful that the shoes I wear don't make things worse. The back of shoes can go up too high sometimes.

You're in a judge-free zone no need to explain yourself. I too have tendon issues. My forearms have been hurting and I can't for the likes of me figure out what I've done differently. So I'm assuming it's a-lupus-thing. Also, I'm not a heavy person and I've recently discovered a pea-size lump on my side above my hip. Have you ever discovered these types of anomalies on you? I've had one on my foot for years but all of a sudden this one crops up.

Ianflashdavies profile image
Ianflashdavies in reply to mimiof9

Not had any lumps so far, but my dad had arthritis and he had loads. Is it a hard or a soft lump. If soft it just may be a fatty tissue lump. Get it checked anyway.

Hi! Sorry for the slow response. I'm back at work after our Christmas shut-down. I need to change the means of which I receive emails from HeathUnlocked and set it up to my personal email account.

I did more research on this topic over the holiday and discovered this anomaly happens to those with RA. I actually Googled, "red knuckles with Lupus". It's funny how you don't put two and two together until much later. I had one of these bumps appear under the base of a nail three years back and had to have it surgically removed. The top digits on my knuckles have a squared off appearance and have caused a lot of discomfort from the past. I know enough now to stay away from salty snack foods which only exacerbate the inflammation in my hands. At 5'9" and 120 lbs. these tiny bumps are quite noticeable when they crop up. And they are a soft pea-size bump.

What I learned? It's not so much an anomaly after-all if you suffer with RA. I do have an appointed Friday with a new Rheumy. I'll be sure to bring it up.

I hope you had a wonderful holiday and the new year finds you optimistic.

Hello, I’ve had no end of problems with Achilles. I found I had torn it didn’t know and had to have intensive physio for a few yrs as I had built up so much scar tissue. My physio was actually mortified I had been walking around on such a severe injury. Fast forward few yrs. I’ve recently just had a scan before Christmas on it and my shoulder. Somehow I’ve torn all the ligaments in my shoulder, Radiographer said have you had a bad fall I said nope. Informed virtually torn all ligaments in my right shoulder. I said must have done my left also as having same problems. She just said my Achilles was not in a good way! Apparently once your Achilles goes it keeps recurring. Mines quite a mess and swollen and deformed, scar tissue, calcification ligaments damage goes on currently waiting on my referral back to rheumatology to see what they suggest. I Use Achilles supports day to day, ice painkillers and elevated were possible.

Also developed trigger finger which is the gift that keeps on giving 😒

After reading all the posts it’s reassuring I’m not alone but it’s sad we are all experiencing this. It was Rheumatology who referred me for the scans as the consultant was very on the ball. When examining me. I just hope she is still around when I have my follow up in the new year sometime. Radiology said to chase them up the week after new year as they would have the results immediately after my scans.

BeeHoneyB, I too know a thing or two about trigger finger. Albeit, for me it was my thumb. After two sessions of cortisone shots and still not going away I had it surgically removed the same time I had surgery on my finger to remove the small lump under my nail I mentioned above. You're right too! It's the gift that keeps on giving. In the worse possible way.

Hi mimiof9 , I’m now scheduled for injections in my shoulder and hand, various stronger painkillers and physio as initial treatment, then possible referral to orthopaedic team.

Onwards and upwards they say!

I'm sorry you're going through this. I know the discomfort is intolerable on high pain days...it seems a series of less invasive procedures needs to be done before they'll do anything minimally invasive. I've had SI joint injections in my neck and back. I was scheduled for a second one in my back but since it was a bad 'back day' and I couldn't get in and out of the car comfortably I cancelled a full day ahead.

I like your positive attitude. Stay strong. Sending well wishes your way.
