Low kidney function

Just sitting by the fireplace, doing nothing. My feet are swollen & red this morning. Doctors tell me my feet are swelling due to low kidney function? They have double my Diuretic, and still is not removing fluid. Waiting on test results from yesterday to determine which way to go next? They are not sure yet, if Lupus is contributing factor or not?

Feet up Tiras - preferably above heart level. Any time you sit down!

How long have you been on the diuretic? It is possible your kidneys have got used to the one you are on and instead of doubling the dose they might be better adding a different one - it is a physiological feature but quite a few doctors forget about it.

The one I’m on now maybe 6 months.

Yes I keep my feet up when sitting down, and a pillow under my feet when laying down. All of my doctors are corresponding with each other. I am seeing a urologist, cardiologist, nephrologist, & rheumatologist.

I had similar swelling of feet and ankles and Drs put it down to a side effect of the amlodipine I was taking for high blood pressure. Just a thought ?

I too am taking Amlodipine. Nothing from doctors have told me that. Thank you for the information.

Hi Tiras The Dr prescribed elasticated socks that were difficult to get on but very comfortable when they were on. Also I have since been in hospital for an entirely different problem (broken bones after a fall) but the medics there noted that I was only to be given my amlodipine if my BP was at or above 130. I have continued this routine since I have come home and I now do not need the socks. I was taking amlodipine every day regardless, before the hosp. visit, which does not really make sense as sometimes my daily BP can be 120 /74 which is within the normal range, so I do not take a pill to lower it even further. I am no medic but hope this helps.

I too was in the hospital for 3 weeks in July & August. I didn’t fall and nothing hit it, I planted my right foot to get my balance, and my right femur just snapped into about 4 inches above my knee. I have a metal rod and plate from knee joint to hip joint. When they put the rid in, my femur crumbled at the top, then they had to add the plate. It took 4 1/2 hours of surgery, that was supposed to be only 1 to 1 1/2 hours. As to compression socks, I can’t wear them due to skin issues from lupus. My skin just peels off or blisters up. I pulled my sleeve up for blood work Wednesday, and it rip my skin about my elbow and bleed for a long time. Yes all information helps. Thank You!😊

Low protein in the blood can also lead to fluid retention. I also had an eGFR (kidney function) of 14 at the time so it was probably a combination of both of these things.Hope you get the right input to resolve your complications.

Exactly what got my kidneys, gromerulonephritis where Lupus inflamed & scarred my kidneys filters. I don't remember swollen feet though but yes definitely elevated feet higher than heart to try & reduce the fluid build up.
