Immune compromised patients boosters

In the us it is assumed that boosters for immunocompromised patients will be FDA approved tomorrow and obtainable in a few weeks. I hope the uk is not too far behind. google.com/amp/s/www.wsj.co...

I think The Who wants everyone to wait so the uk had not decided yet. The uk should hopefully be getting the 12 to 17 year olds vaccinated too. Their high fully vaccination numbers are for only 18 and up. Our 69 percent at least partially vaccinated are for 12 and up.

I see

Something else interesting is that the UK numbers although dropping for a few weeks still have a 7 day average 27000 while the us has a 118000 seven day average. This looks like the us is so much worse off than the uk until you take into account our population is five times larger than the uk so their infection numbers per capita are higher than ours still.

I just saw a doctors comment that describes what is happening in the US as an « atrocity. » We have an abundance of vaccine and people refusing it.

I am so happy to live in ct we have great percents my town is 80 percent of the 12 and up is vaccinated and we have had no new cases in weeks! My county is red ( Mew Haven has more vaccine hesitancy) so everyone is still wearing masks at stores. So different than Florida or Texas.

I was told by my doctor that these were likely to be coming in October, with the flu jabs.

According to the Guardian yesterday the uk booster jab along with the flu jab is due to start on 6th September. But they still haven’t decided which groups need to have it! Some think it’s only the people who are likely to have not made enough antibodies (eg immunosupressed) but others think it should be over 50s. X

Or both?

I do wonder if it is better ultimately in avoiding worse variants if we all just give boosters to those with immune suppression and focus on getting the rest of the world fully vaccinated.

The US just authorized boosters for the immunosuppressed. No specifics yet but medications for autoimmune disease were mentioned and MMF was one found to blunt vaccine response so it seems likely that will be on the list.

That is a hard question. Maybe best to think there are two issues here. Right now the problems are the virus and the ability to produce adequate immune response to the vaccine. You need protection from the virus and may need the booster so that you don’t get a break through infection.

Yes, MMF makes you immunosuppressed. That is because the medication needs to quiet the immune system. It’s a trade off.

I’m on MMF and Rituximab so double whammy. Fully vaccinated but no spike antibody response. Rheumatologist wants me to wait until October for the booster which is 3 months after last infusion. I am anxious to get it

Yes, sounds like you really need it. Good your rheumatologist is guiding you about timing. I know you will be really careful.

US: Just saw the report. Yes, get your order for (1) antibody level test and (2) your 3rd shot (the latest aren’t calling it a booster). It’s a 3rd full shot for both Moderna and Pfizer). I HIGHLY recommend everyone read the data - which sadly I think a lot of us felt would happen - that our medications would reduce effectiveness and/or our diseases would worsen. It’s highly variable so work closely with the most informed doc you can. Do not only rely on the FDA or CDC. The vaccine companies are good about publishing their data and informing the public. I don’t want to be that person, but Pfizer knew it’s vaccine was wearing off and was basically begging the FDA to approve a booster. This was well over a month ago. The FDA said no. Now, here we are rushing to get ppl revaccinated. It’s very frustrating being in a country that has politicized all of this. My apologies on behalf of the US. So, watch the data, reach out to trusted physicians, ask our board admins and your regional public health resources. Our US health agencies - FDA and CDC - are now reactive, not proactive and it’s a shame. I’ve had 11 friends, all health and under 50 go come down with Delta. All were vaccinated with J&J or Pfizer at least 5 months ago. As immune compromised individuals, we owe it to ourselves to do everything we can for protection. Order good masks, distance, if you have to get a 3rd shot do it, keep things clean and pick up a random hobby to not go totally nuts staying inside. Oh, and exercise when ppl aren’t around. We switched it up to night walks and avoiding parks and such. Better for the skin anyway. Sadly, avoiding kids and teens. We’re having mega breakouts here among these populations. Breaks my heart. Haven’t seen my neices and nephew for over 2 yrs :( . But one had Chron’s so we stay safe. Love and best wishes to you all. Care for each other and yourselves ❤️

Hi Roarah, we are awaiting the same response in Australia. We have folk dying at home from the Delta Strain, so we remain in total lockdown with NSW Police and Military patrolling to prevent movement of people. To say our Government “messed up the vaccination roll out” is a sad understatement. We were virtually COVID free for a year, yet the Scomo Government couldn’t get the vaccination process done in that window of time. I was on prednisone when given Pfizer so I am extremely keen to see the UK and Australia’s response to the FDA Recommendations. Thanks for the update
