Hi,

A few days ago, my dentist prescribed me amoxicillin for my painful tooth. I was reading online about it. I read an article saying it is not recommended to be prescribed to someone who takes mychophenolate mofetil. Is this right ?

And if so what should I do

I don't think it is dangerous as such but it may make the mycophenlate less effective. You could speak to your GP about an alternative - they should know more about it than the dentist will.

Glad you posted: I was unaware of this issue. Rheumatology & immunology have had me on both myco Cellcept & coamoxicillin every day for years...we’ve not noticed any probs at all with the effectiveness of either med. am wondering if maybe coamoxicillin (the compound of amoxicillin + clavulanic acid) could be a better choice for you?

HiI am not sure about amoxicillin but pretty sure with mycophenollate if you need antibiotics you must stop taking mycophenolate whilst on them . I was told this last time I had an infection. I take it three times a day. Hope that helps, hope you feel better soon take care M x

I would have thought the reason they tell you to stop taking mycophenolate is that it’s an immunosuppressant and when you are prescribed antibiotics you are trying to fight off a bacterial infection, so you want to avoid using immunosuppressant so that your own immune system can help fight off the bacterial infections.

HiI am sure you are right, no point taking conflicting meds, it causes all kinds of problems . To be honest I only take antibiotics when I really need them . Still find the odd doctor wants to prescribe for slightest thing but if I can get by I will . Then when something serious comes along I feel I have a better fighting chance . M x

Speak to your Pharmacist, they’re the experts on medications and how they react with each other. Hope you find something that helps.
