For hair that is falling out quite a bit? I am worried at the amount I am losing.
Is there anything that can be done...: For hair... - LUPUS UK
Is there anything that can be done...
Lots of people with AI disease have hair loss as you probably know. I had almost all of mine at the sided come out so was left with this horrendous looking mullet that I had to chop off.
Anaemia can be a contributing factor to hair loss as are deranged levels of some hormones such as prolactin. It might be worth a discussion with your GP and having some bloods done before going out to get any supplements that may be suggested.
My hair has improved since reducing my steroids but it is nowhere near what it was. I expect you'll get alot of helpful tips on here as most people have struggled with hair loss at some point and are really supportive.
What meds are you on?
Good luck.
I am on Plaquenil right now, warfarin, and for hypothyroidism Synthroid.
I'm not massively clues up on thyroid issues so it might be an idea to get baseline bloods.
one product that I and friends use is a shampoo and conditioner set called seroxyl. It's made by L'Oréal and is treatment for thinning hair. I used it when I was on methotrexate. It helps but does dry the hair out a bit so after I use the conditioner, I use a second conditioner, a regular one.
But as I say it might be worth getting baseline iron studies done and any other bloods that your GP might want to test in relation to your hair loss.
Are you a member of the thyroid community on HU? I'm not but I've heard that it's a good one.
My thyroid levels are good and my medication is at the perfect level right now (they made sure as I was just n the hospital). I was on the thyroid community but I left. So many people having so many troubles with being hypothyroid. I didn’t under the drama. I have had this since I was a child and most of my family has it. Lots of people do. I haven’t heard anyone complaining about it or having as many troubles with it. So I left it.
My iron is great because I have had several iron transfusions while in the hospital. And my hair is falling out more now than before. I am in a lupus flare though. Could be that. Just stress and not dealing with it properly. Thank you for all your help!
Hi,
Had the same and understand. Disappearing eyebrows not been good either - only time I was glad I wear specs.
Seriously though it's not fun. I'm on Hydroxy, Methotrexate, Prednisone, Warfarin and quite a few others for SLE, APS and other physical probs. Lupus has been the main culprit with hair loss.
We're all different, the hair loss is frustrating and embarrassing and I deal with it by being a bit more gentle. No yanking through a brush, a decent but simple shampoo softly used once a week only and sadly a deep breath. I read years ago that being a bit calmer with the brushing and cleansing can give your scalp a rest and it may help take some stress out of looking in the mirror.
Apart from hormone levels, and the damage that comes from having to take some rather tough meds at time there's not a lot we can do. Over the last fifteen years I've experience some bad hair loss and yet do believe apart from us and the plug hole after we've washed it it probably isn't as noticeable as we think to others.
Keep strong,x
Are you taking 1mg daily Folate? If not please try.
Hi Willow
Same issues, hair falling out for years. I reckon I've lost nearly 50% thickness. I was losing eyelashes and brows too.
I've had great success with the Grow Gorgeous hair oils. But they are expensive and I can'taffordto use them often.
I'm currently trying the watermans shampoo and conditioner. I love them so far. They are the 1st shampoo product for thinning hair that I've used that hasn't left my remaining hair feeling like straw. They smell lovely too.
I won't try the Dr organics hemp hair products, they dried my hair out.
I think its also meant to be good to massage your head daily and only wash your hair a few times a week or less.
The best success I've had is with hairburst eyebrow and eyelashes serum. I got 2 with a bogof. I use one for brows, the other for lashes so there's no cross contamination. I now have lashes and brows back 😊, it took a few months of daily use, but definitely worth a try.
Good luck, Sarah
