Hi

I am due to get vaccine soon but was wondering do we still have to shield after the first, I’m working from home but getting pressured to return to office

I believe we do, since the first vaccine doesn't lead to immunity (and then maybe not after the second but it certainly reduces disease severity according to tests). After the first any effect won't kick in for about 3 weeks I believe.

Hi Jake

I had my telephone consultation today with my Consultant. I'm having my first vaccine tomorrow and he told me I need to shield until after my second vaccine. He also said that with the new variants going around they would prefer us to continue until they have more information.

Yes - shielding is still required unti at least a week after the 2nd shot. And that may change as more information is gathered. They are already suspecting that the first shot isn't creating good immunity levels in the oldest patients.

Hi. Thanks for the info regarding elderly people. Is this written down anywhere please? I live in sheltered housing and many of the others here are over 80 and I don’t think they realise they should still be being as careful now that they have had their first jabs. It would be good to have something to show management.

This says that it appears it is not until after the second jab that over 80s have enough immunity to be safe against one of the mutations - which are as great a concern now as the original version was last year. This was always a risk when they decided to extend the gap between jabs to 12 weeks.

It has been clearly said the whole time that that for the vulnerable shielding should continue until at least a week after the second jab. But people only hear what they want to hear. The concept of one jab for more people is not that it stops you getting it but that you may get it less badly if you do get it. But how badly is badly when you are over 80 or otherwise CEV?

This is sheltered housing which is a block of flat, so you buy your own flat. It comes with pull cords linked to an answering service 24/7 and a communal lounge. There is a member of the property management staff here on weekdays for 5 hours. But the management is not particularly good and usually needs pushing into things. And as the over 80s are in a big majority here they often get there way even if it’s not what they should be doing.

Hi Jake1001I have had both my vaccines December and Jan..when the lockdown was announced my Manager sent me home to Shield as she had received email.. (work for nhs) my NHS letter says to shield until 27th Feb..(they obviously didn't know about my vaccinations) i understand how you might be feeling..sorry your feeling pressure to return to work..take care 🌻🦋

I don't know about shielding yes or no, but you will have some immunity from jab one and antibodies are being seen in follow up tests but it depends on your condition. I would say if you feel you are still vulnerable and there's a chance you can be, don't let them pressure you. I think its terrible any one being pressured back as the information on if you can still get Covid after the jab is still unclear. Most people have some immunity but can you still spread it? If you are vulnerable you may need to have jab two first. I would have a chat with GP about your concerns and if necessary get a note to back you up. Your employer isn't a medical expert. They cannot go against any advice from your GP or hospital. If you feel unsafe or unsure how are they going to make you safe? If you have worked o. K from home, why can't you continue for a bit longer? Tell them to get lost.
