Surely they need to think seriously about putting us all back into shielding regardless of tier if this new strain to so much more of a risk

It is in other countries too - and the other scientists are actually saying it isn't yet clear whether it really IS a more infectious version or whether there was a superspreader event that started it off. There is little evidence that it is more infectious in the Netherlands for example and it has been there for a while too.

Watching from afar - I could well believe the superspreader/lack of care version ...

But basically - it is up to us. There is no official shielding here in Italy, the nearest they got to that here was that over 70s should stay at home as much as possible. It is up to us.

I've continued to stay at home once shielding ended in both july and November and I have no plans to do anything differently until numbers are well down and I'm vaccinated but some people need "official advice" to follow.Looking at the photos in the news of people cramming into pubs (sad lot) despite tier 4 im not surprised it's taking hold whether it be by super spreading or more virility. I hope the good folk of wales stick to the guidelines better then they fmdo in some parts of England.where I am I'm tier 2 ...cant see that lasting if people dont stay home over Christmas. X

I totally agree with you, when we see pictures on tv, with protests, pubs full, people partying on the street, it makes me mad when I have stuck to the rules. And yet another letter is on its way to us shielders again, it’s not going to be a total lockdown but more or less telling us to stay in again. 🙄 roll on the vaccine 💉

Not sure the new strain should take all the blame, just the uncontrolled rate of spread...but the distressing thing is that for those that have to work, and can't work from home (I'm fortunate there 👍), they have to rely on the goodwill of their employer or depend on receiving a letter confirming the CEV category - and we know from experience how well that went, plus there's the Christmas post delays - in order to claim benefits..

Interestingly - there are 2 known cases in Rome, a Brit and partner who had returned from the UK. Luckily they had had to isolate after arriving - but neither has any symptoms. And THAT may be the reason it is spreading easily.

OTOH, I try to assume everyone has it ...

Many thanks Kevin, doesn't take account of the is-it-isn't-it the very spreadable version stemming from my local hospital...😑...still to track which doctors have been where (it was consultants' ski holidays that first brought it to this region).. xxx
