Prednisone side effects

Hi all. I have been on planquinil and prednisone for 2 months and methotrexate for a 2 months. I have noticed that my face shape has changed, it looks more round and moon like and my right ankle has been swollen for a week. Could it be the side effects of the meds?

Hi.cushings syndrome or moon face is a consequence of taking the prednisolone. I've been on prednisolone for nearly 7 years.it does go once steroids have been stopped...takes about a month.you may also find you look 6 months pregnant as steroids also cause bloating.sorry no idea about the ankle x

One of the more common side effects of prednisone is to cause deposits of fat in certain places: around the face causing the moonface (or hamster cheeks), on the back of the neck and around the midriff. You can help by cutting carbs drastically - especially processed carbs and added sugar and most fruit and root veg (above ground veg are mostly OK). It should go as you reduce the dose but not always. I lost 35lbs by cutting carbs and the first place it went was around my midriff. However - after 11 years on pred all my doctors say you can't tell I am on steroids and I put it down to really restricted carbs.

Prednisone is a Steroid. It quickly causes weight gain. And puffiness in your face . Plaqunil is an anti malaria drug. And they also use it for Lupus, RA , and other autoimmune diseases. Methotrexate is a low dose chemotherapy used to treat Lupus, RA , and other autoimmune diseases. You will have these side effects. They are all harsh medications . You can’t be on prednisone long term, because it’s not good for your bones . Be sure your Doctor checks your liver , and kidney function every three months with blood work . I been off Methotrexate for a year, because my liver enzymes are very high. My body can tell the difference being off the methotrexate. I experience more pain. Even though I’m still taking Plaqunnil and other medications to treat my Lupus. I honestly am experiencing more pain not taking Methotrexate. You will experience feeling awful, but give it time for your body to adjust to the medications. You will begin to feel better. Make sure you take Folic Acid while taking Methotrexate. Feel better. I will keep you in my prayers 🙏🏻💜💙😊🦋

Swollen single ankle doesn't look likr a side effect, maybe something else? Like others said cut carbs, and youbwill deposit less fat and water. Onve you go down on steroids the moon face will disapear completely

I am on Methylprednisolone for Lupus and have been on it for many years. No matter what the doctors say it causes deterioration of the bone. I have severe osteoporosis and have been treated for that twice with Forteo. At one point I had kidney disease and was treated with Cytoxin. This is a cancer fighting drug and I did not know enough to know that various drugs are used to treat cancer. The kidneys started working again but now are over active. I am on a low enough dose so that my face is not round. One eye doctor states that my issues with dry eyes come from the Placquenil that I also have been on for years. Another eye doctor states that it is not connected. Sometimes, I do not know which doctor to believe. I had cataract surgery and now also see a retinologist. I use drops for the dry eyes. I find it difficult to walk with a cane and a mask. The mask fogs up my glasses. At the ripe old age of 70, my life is pretty limited at this point.

As other have said, prednisolone causes moonface, dose dependent. I’m on 3mg and don’t have that problem. You seem to be on a lot of medication, hopefully they will be able to reduce it soon. No idea about the swollen ankle, sorry. Good luck.
