There are various benevolent funds for people who have worked in certain sectors (here are a couple of examples: foryoubyyou.org.uk/rcn.org.uk/get-help/member-... or indeed for gentlewomen in distress - and I think many of us would qualify under that banner - so I'd encourage folks to Google benevolent funds and see what turns up that might be applicable...some offer immediate help, some offer longer-term support but it's definitely worth checking out!
Another thought - there's the New Enterprise Allowance for folks on certain benefits to help start a business, not nearly as generous as Thatcher's version (which was £40 a week for a year, if I remember rightly - lots of musicians started their careers on it!)
